These "are" the Pearl Holes.

I have never attacked unwanted holes with this much attention.

But they really bother me.

I am developing some new methods.

I want to see how well I can do.

So guys............this is going to take awhile.

The dreaded Pearl holes. One of my Slingerland kits has them as well. Nasty mess to fix. Thought I was doing a good thing in 1978...

Interested in what method you come up with. Hope it goes well !!

Interesting project to say the least. You fiberglass guys have a skill like no other.

Must have been a million Pearl tom mounts sitting around 40 years ago.

Truing, straightening/flattening edges.

These shells usually are not square or even.

This one is one of those.

1 side has been squared and edge sanded flat.

The other side??

About 1/8" out of square.

Got square lines marked.

Will connect the dots with a sanding block or belt sander.

Then,back to the truing table tomorrow.

Dang! Did Allen send that shell out like that, or was it something that happened to the drum over the years? That shell was out by a lot!

Bass Drums are the most difficult to square due to the size.

I think Allen got them close enough to sell.

Besides, there is probably not that much difference in a BD being out 1/8" to 3/16".

You probably would not hear the difference.

I remember when we first started building the shells. Getting them square was definitely a skill that came with a lot of practice. By the end there, it was a piece of cake. ;-)

Scott, do you just round off the edges after squaring, or do you cut any angles on them with a router? How did Allen do it? I wonder how those f'kers would sound with double 45's on em???
