From Brewkowski

I'm so excited!! Can't wait to see it finished and the look on grandson's face when he gets it!

Glenn, Brew - It'll go fast from here. I was waiting for the longest time for some $ we've been expecting to arrive. I was finally able to buy the things I needed to complete the project and now, I'm tearing into it like a hungry mountain lion.

I'll start wrapping tomorrow. All the hardware has been cycled through the tumbler, drum heads are waiting and I hope to have these knocked by Thursday/Friday. I'll have to coordinate schedules with my son and Daughter-in-law so I can take the drums in to New York for my grandson. I'll get photos when I present him the drums. I'm itching to git'R'done.

Thank you ALL for your help and support with this project. This one, because it's for my grandson, is important to me. I tip my hat and bow deep at the waist to my drum-brothers, who helped make it happen.

Deeply appreciated...

John

Hi John, Those are gonna look great. They look familiar to me, for some reason.

John,

This has been such a cool thread to follow. That is a great thing you are doing for your grandson. The color is appropriate as you have been having "dreams of green glass" for as long as I have known you. ;)

(ok, these are not Blaemires, but every bit as great due to love going I to them)

Those are going to be so sweet! I hope to maybe get a look at them before they depart for NY.

John, I doubt you'll need anything but keep in mind a helping hand is an hour away.

Believe it or else!

Jeff - Mike Curotto recently penned; "You never see luggage on a hearse!"

What I really hope to do is leave behind a life-time memory for my grandson. After I'm long gone, every time he sees the drums, or any set of drums, he's going to think warmly about the old man and he'll remember me. It's my way of cheating death! I'll still be alive in the minds (and hopefully hearts,) of my family and friends.

That's the Bottom Line and what it's all about amigo...

Good news!

The snare drum is complete/finished! It looks absolutely killer even if I do say so myself. Check it out:

The snare drum is one I made for my grandson two X-mas's ago. He wanted to learn to play, so I took a 6-ply Keller maple shell I had, drilled it for 10 bowties, all hardware is nickel over brass with the exception of the strainer which is chrome over brass. I added a vintage Ludwig strainer and butt plate, topped off with a new set of Evans heads and Puresound wires. The drum sounds amazing! Every bit as good as any Jazzfest I've heard. Solid, warm, woody tone. The drum has dbl.45 degree edges so it is clear, crisp and projects well. And now for some....

Bad news!

This glass wrap is so thick and brittle, it's almost impossible to cut! It took me almost -two hours- last night to trim up one bearing edge of excess wrap on the rack tom. Arghhhh! Frustrating as hell. I'm using a utility knife with fresh blades and it's still very s-l-o-w going.

There's more... the new set of Evans heads I got from my buddy Glenn (Fer428) and his son - do not fit!- This wrap is so thick, I'll have to trim it away from the bearing edges so that my grandson will be able to get heads on these tubs. Again, frustrating as hell. It is easily going to take another full week of work/labor to finish this kit properly.

Please, be patient and stay tuned. The rack tom is a work in progress, but I wanted to share a photo of it anyway.

Glass wraps... tough stuff to work with. Challenging, even for an old-hand like me. I do not recommend the job to novices. If you've wrapped five or more kits in your time, then it's a job you can attempt. But I'll tell you now, you'll draw on every scrap of experience you have to get the job done right. I rate it a strong 8 on the difficulty scale.

More to come... hang in there friends.

Ahh, you'll get it. Just take your time, were in no hurry. The snare looks very nice, and Im not a big fan of green either. I wondered how that glass wrap would be to work with, glad your doing it,LOL!

Thank you!
