Only EIGHT documented Jazzette kits?

Only EIGHT documented Jazzettes? Is that all?

I have heard "tales" of other Jazzettes, but I know of no other documented Jazzette kits than the ones listed on the Vintage Drum Guide's special Jazzette section.

Surely, there are more out there. I have no reason to dispute the stories of other kits. But isn't it curious that, in all the years and throughout all the people who look for such things, that only EIGHT kits have managed to surface long enough to be photographed and listed?

It's always something. Someone has a "Jazzette" from 1964 ...or someone has a "Jazzette" with a 18 X 14 bass drum...etc.

Where have all the Jazzettes gone?

O-Lugs,

Don't you own two of them? Congrats! That's amazing! I've seen one on eBay awhile back and I believe one at the Chicago drum show a few years ago.

Well...kind of.

I have owned a red sparkle Dowbeat snare for 25 years. I was gifted a 12 X 18 red sparkle bass drum (complete with railmount and disappearing spike spurs) a few years ago. Less than a week after I got that gift, an all-matched red sparkle Downbeat shellpack came up for auction. The serial numbers were in line with the 12 X 18 bass drum, so I bid on it and won. All the numbers are in line -with the exception of the pre-existing snare drum, which is about a year older (1966) according to the badge numbering chart.

I have the option to take the tom tom and the floor tom and mix/match them with the two bass drums. In one instance, I have a complete Downbeat kit -WITH the Downbeat snare drum. In the other instance, I have a Jazzette. But, since I have the Downbeatsnare, I tend to set it up as a complete Downbeat kit as opposed to the option for a Jazzette

The other red sparkle Jazzette is a completely legit one right down to the hardware package -EVERYTHING is matched -including the Supra -all keystone badges from early 1969. It's one of only two complete (with snare drum) matched Jazzette kits I have ever seen. The other one is the black Cortex one listed in the Jazzette section of the Vintage Drum Guide It came with a matching chrome Jazz Combo snare drum and was purportedly, made for Roy Haynes, but was never picked up for some unknown reason. That's the story, anyway. And that kit did not have the matching hardware package.

They are indeed, VERY VERY rare drum sets to find as complete.

But to think that only eight have been photographed and somehow documented is quite amazing to me.

Where are they all, if none of us "drum geeks" haven't found them by now?

There's a couple on ebay right now. They never struck me as rare, but I've never bothered to look for 'em. I'm not physically built for an 18 inch bass. It's just too small for my ... ummmm ... "non-willowy" frame.

There's one on ebay that sucks, but the other two seem ok. Check 'em out if you're looking.

Whoa! I did a quick EBay search under "jazzette" and only one new kit came up. What are you looking at? Maybe I should define what I mean by "matched Jazzette kits"...

What I am talking about is a matched drum set that Ludwig made (in America) back in the 60's and 70's called a "Jazzette" with very specific dimensional/cosmetic/hardware aspects.

I'm not talking about a kit with any old 18" bass drum.

I'm not talking about a pieced-together set.

I'm not talking about an altered or refurbished set.

I am not talking about a new, Chinese-made "American" set.

BTW, I am 6'1" and hovering around the second century mark, myself. I don't consider that to be "willowy" either. What does a person's body size have to do with the size bass drum they choose? LOL! I don't get it. I mean, unless you're like 8 feet tall....Laughing H

If you're not open to refurbs or alts or missing rims or incorrect this or that or whatever ... well ... have at 'em. I'm not sure you can find many kits that aren't tweaked in some way.

The question was centered around the location of actual jazzettes. It's still a jazzette if the wrap has been changed or the spurs are moded or what have you.

This one is the real deal. It's been rewrapped, but it's a jazzette. HATE the new color. Again, it's a jazzette by any definition.

There are jazzettes out there. I come across them fairly often. As far as the size of the bass and my ability to play it ... I can't.

I tried playing a 16 and an 18 and flat out couldn't get the toms and such positioned to my liking. I guess I'm not as malleable as others. I am finely getting used to the 20 inch bass ... and kinda liking it. It's a tough one for me. I've been at this for about forty-five or six years and have taken on my share of bad habits. One of them is tom positioning. If it ain't "just so", I have a dickens of a time playing with any fluidity. Oh well. Hey, I'm making progress with that 20 inch bass, though. That's something, I guess.

Hmmm, I can think of 12 kits that I've seen photos of, and have 12x18 bass drums:

4 that I've had: 70's SBP, 70's WMP, 60's Natural Maple, 60's Blue Sparkle

2 of Olugs', both red sparkle

1 70's Natural Mahogany, belongs to Britt

1 70's WMP 6 ply, belongs to Mario

1 70's WMP, belongs to Pete

1 70's Black Nitron, has had a few owners

1 60's Mahogany on ebay (though this one has an added muffler on BD)

1 60's Natural Maple, belongs to forum member Jamie, has Rogers spurs
