Finally had time to work on the kit again. The bass drum hoops that came with the set were black with a chrome inlay. After discovering the hoops were maple I went ahead and sanded all the black paint off. Turns out the hoops wer not solid maple and the veneer was very thin and starting to delaminate. So with some patience and glue I saved them. It was impossible to remove 100% of the black paint being the hoops were veneer and couldn't take too much sanding.

I cut a 1/2 strip of the koa veneer to use as an inlay. I just used my Tight Bond wood glue to fasten it to the hoop. The inlay groove on these hoops varied in depth and the more I worked with them the more I realized how crappy they were.

In the end they look OK, not great but just OK. I used some shading addative in the clear lacquer to give the hoops some color and help cover up the remaining black paint. If I ever get a job again I might buy new maple hoops for this kit.

Picture one, hoop with one coat of sealer.

Picture two, finished hoop with sealer and and three coats of shaded lacquer, then a gloss top coat.

Picture three, hoop with the black paint.

You're a nit-picking perfectionist, Jeff! That hoop came out gorgeous! No need for new ones at all. Hard to get that golden, naturally aged look from new hoops. Superb job on these drums. Fun thread to follow.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Why did you not use paint remover instead of sanding? Experience or personal preference? I think black with the veneer would look pretty cool myself. Great job on the drums.

Jeff that's interesting the hoops were maple veneer. Who'd a thunk it?? I see the new hoops most places sell are ply maple hoops. Maybe look for a nice older set. I'm with John I love the golden look of those. Very nice inlay work and yes bet it was a pia to correct them. But they do look sweet in the pics.

Here's a question for anyone.......how do you tell Rogers bass hoops from say Slingerlands? Didn't both use a 1/2 inlay? Or is the depth/width on them different?

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

amosguy, thank you!

I dont use it because its messy and I just dont like it. I have a Festool sander that is connected to a dust extractor so 90% of the old paint dust is vacumed away. I have tried paint remover before and it seems to leave the wood kinda oily. Most of the time sanding the paint off works fine because I usually paint them black. This time I was going for a natural maple look. But even paint remover would not get the black stain from the paint out of the the plys on the edge's where its rounded over.

These will do, and Im sure once the kit is all together they will look fine.

For Glenns question, I dont know either. All I can add is the inlay groove on my Slingerland hoops were just under 1/2" wide, close to 7/16".

Those came out great. The koa inlay is going to draw the attention away from any minor imperfections. If there are some areas that show more, just put them towards the bottom. Once the claws and t-handles are on, those issues will auto-magically disappear.

Thank you, yes I agree, the claws do cover up a large prcentage of the hoop. I sould start to move along on these now that my cabinet job has been delivered. I still need a few parts, waiting for Drummaker to ship.

Yes, those mid-late 70's hoops were not the best. After heavy use they usually are twisted like a pretzel. At least you were able to save those.

Can't wait to see that kit up on it's feet....
