Now that I have decided on the koa wrap it is time to get to work. I had actually started on this a couple months ago.
I like to place all the parts in different bags to keep them organized. Removing wrap with a heat gun is not so bad but getting the glue off is another story. I used xylene for the first time. It works well but boy it really smells so get a charcoal filtered respirator if you’re going to use it.
I was able to save all of the badges and grommets. The big R badge is ugly in my opinion. I was going to leave them off but my wife has convinced me to put them back on.
At the end of this day I have the wrap and glue removed from all of the shells, yay! Now with any luck the koa veneer will arrive tomorrow. I still want to clean up the insides of some of the shells and spray some new finish on them. And I noticed the floor tom shell has a small amount of delaminating going on so I will need to glue and clamp those areas. I really hope to wrap the drums next weekend but my cabinet job comes first.
