Ludwig 1970s Black Panther "monster" .....

Loading...

I know I’ve not done anything to this set in quite a while (and haven’t had a whole lot of playing time recently anyway), but eventually I need to put up those 15” toms I picked up a few years ago. I haven't added them to my set yet but with Ludwig doing their ATLAS mounts now, this is the perfect opportunity to do so! I plan to remove the Pearl mounts (of course turning the side of the drum with the mount holes against the drum next to it so nobody can see the holes) and install the ATLAS mounts to hold the toms onto my set. While I'm at it, I probably will put ATLAS mounts on my other rack toms as well.

Since I’m currently running the 10” (concert), 12-13-14” setup, I’m thinking of adding one of the 15’s where the 14” currently is and back the row of toms up one position.

Need to ask opinions on the 10” tom from you guys. Turn it into a double headed tom to match the rest of my toms (requiring making offset lugs and locating a Ludwig tom rim), or keep it as is and find some 6” and 8” concert toms from the same era and re-wrap them with that close kind of vinyl that poppy79424 has access to, and make a run of 6-8-10" concert toms, with 2 of the 3 being fake Black Panther?

Good to see this thread again. That is a seriously fun kit. I think at this point you have to add the 6" and 8". It's probably a moral imperative.

I currently live in an apartment, hence why I haven't played much recently. The place seen in the pictures is my sister-in-law's basement. They live out in the country with no neighbors really close, so it's perfect to play drums there. But, they live 45 min. away from me, so I don't go there as much as I want to play! Someday I'll have my own place again where I can set them up and get back at it!

Hmmm...... I know poppy can hook me up with "close" looking wrap, and I do know a guy who is selling a pair of 6 + 8" with the same pointed b/o badges and the same granitone interior my 10" already has on it, and they look to still be in round, which is good cause sometimes those old ones look oval shaped.

Hi.

That sure is a monster kit. Love Black Panther wrap, been trying to find one, a little smaller than yours though :-)

I hope your not only 5 feet tall ;-)

Thanks for sharing.

5'11".

That kit is basically 2 different Black Panther kits that I own put together, as well as other assorted random Black Panther drums I managed to pick up along the way.

There's some other sizes I wish I had bid on through Ebay over the last couple years, but at the time I didn't have any spare money to do so. What sucks is it seems many of the people who buy Black Panther wrapped drums do so with the intention of ripping off the Black Panther and recovering with something else.

Love the kit! Black panther is my favorite finish, i like the way the chrome stands out against the satin black and the blue and olive badges really pop.

I also have a BP kit and would like to add some more drums, but in the UK they don't come on the market very often. I envy you guys in the States as you seem to have a lot of choice available to you not to mention the difference in price, here Ludwig drums fetch silly money.

They don't come around THAT often. LoLoLoLo I just have to keep looking, and over the last few years, I've managed to find some here and there.

Great looking BP's you have there! Clapping Happy2

Thanks, these are 22 13 16 18 dated 1971 and I love them! the guys in the band think these are the best sounding drums I have.

It may be that the wrap is so thin it lets the drums speak I also have another 70s kit in silver sparkle but that one has a 24 kick with the same size toms as the black panther, I just love Ludwig drums.

Do your black panthers have fairly sharp bearing edges as opposed to being rounded over on the outside edge? I noticed this with all of the drums it may be that this was the way they were doing the edges back then in 71.

I will double check next time I am over there. They weren't crazy sharp edges if I remember.

In the last two weeks, I picked up some more used rack clamps for that old '90s Pearl drum rack I have, so I can now attach two more rack bars from the rear sections of my rack onto my home-made gong stand. This way, I can remove even more tripod stands off the ground and clean up the look a bit.
