Possibly the worst yellowing of WMP ever.

Tan lines were thought to be sexy in the 60's, but not on drums!

Recently picked these poor girls, "for parts" but I can't bring my self to do that.

Aside from the "tangerine" pearl finish, there's ply separation, and both hoops are coming apart. I had an old 20" logo head so I popped it on and put some legs in the bass.

So question is, what should I do with them?

Pretty sure the yellow is here to stay, I'm afraid to rewrap, because I'd the separation. Should I just glue and clamp the shells, clean them and pray I find a clubdate 14"? (Btw the 14 shell in the one pic is an example of normal yellowing.)

Your opinion matters! What should I do?

Yellow carpenters glue and some clamps will take care of most of what ails that kit. Question: Are the yellow parts of the wrap tacky/sticky? I'm asking because it looks more like smoke damage, than it does light damage.

If it's from cigarette smoke, you might be able to clean much of it off. If it's light damage, it is what it is. I'd save those. Aside from the wrap it's pretty much all there. I'd work with it/give it a try, at least.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I agree with Purdie. That seems to be way too much for simple UV degradation. Clean the shells first and see what you get.

Unlike many on the forum, I would say if a wrap is that far shot (assuming it doesn't clean up worth a flip) re-wrap them in something you like. A great looking set of refurbished Club Dates beats a really horrible looking original kit in my book.

No the wrap is hard and has one crack on the bass so I will try a little elbow grease and see. I'm actually already working on pluging and wrapping my '64 silver sparkle clubdate, so ripping the wrap off of another set is NOT appealing right this moment. So I think the order of the day may be just to stabilize this set.

Now those drums have some serious character. It's nice to hear that you don't want to part them. Cigarette smoke was my initial thought, too. It looks like it spent it's life in a dive bar. I would clean it up the best I could, get everything functional to the best it can be and call it a "player's set" and have some fun with it. I'd rewrap it if there were chunks missing but I'd probably keep this the way it is because that is way too much character. They just want to be loved.

Those drums are like a Chinese Crested dog. They are so far past aged, or "mellowed" that you just have to love them as is!

Why the expression: "a face only a mother could love" pops into my mind,...?

Nonetheless, a great kit with lots of character!

Cig smoke would have colored it more uniformly I think. Could be a como of bothe light and smoke but it appears to me that it is mostly light. Spray som krud kutter on it and see waht happens.
