Possibly the worst yellowing of WMP ever.

From Drummerjohn333

Clubdate - Yeah - that is some crazy yellowing! At the same time, you have done a beautiful job on the restore thus far. I couln't help but notice - is that a reel to reel you have sitting there (brown)? I have a Roberts 1040 that I am looking to part with. Let me know if you are interested or could point me in the right direction. Thanks,John

No actually it's a made in china portable record player, I frequent thrift stores and found it for $12.

Oddly enough the singer in my band is also a recording engineer, Does the Roberts 1040 record or just playback? Either way ill let him know.

I got this pair a few years back at the Salvation Army for $50. Pretty yellowed themselves but not to the degree that yours were. I searched for a floor tom for about three years before finding one. It's a bit too light in color but after looking that long I didn't care. It cost me quite a bit though. I figured it would be an easy color to find but once I started looking they all seemed to dry up. I had just missed one with similar yellowing when I first got the drums. Oh well, they sound great together.

I've got a pretty beat up 14" clubdate floortom shell that lost most of the mahogany outer ply when someone tried to tear off the wrap.

IF I were to re-wrap this set I'd match the floortom, since I'd never get new wrap that would match.

The retro bright really scuffed up the wrap and there is a huge crack in the wrap on the bass drum. So who knows I may re-wrap in the future if the cracking persist. Until then I'll work on perserving the little combo.

Ive got quite a few Wmp drums. I actually like them better when they get a little yellow to them. Brings out the pattern in it better I think.

Wow, nice job. Realize I'm late to this thread but you said you used Retr0bright?

I've got some mildly yellowing WFL's, never even really cleaned them except dusting them off after picking them up from the first or second owner. Might consider trying some of this magic drum elixir.

Sounds way safer to the wrap than that other method of bringing back WMP :)

Found it!!

My particular wrap was really in bad shape. I'm not sure if it was the retrobright or the original damage but my drums are almost matte in finish now. I would use caution on a WFL set, especially if the drum is only slightly yellowed. I would for sure use the best chemicals and the blacklight.

Remember my drums were ready for the curb. There was no harm in trying.

I may try it again on another damaged or drilled shell.

Ya, I would be very careful with chemicals on wrap. One of the most important things I have learned from these guys on VDF is that vintage drums do not have to be perfect to enjoy them. The yellowing, the rash, the fade are all just part of the mojo, or the story that goes with them. My Fibes kit is a little beat up and has some rust but I love it, its original. In fact, Im done (for a while) looking for drums that need wrap. I want original drums even if the wrap is faded or damaged, I now have enough "new looking drums" Chris makes a very good point that his were ready for the curb, and thats the perfect kit to try experimenting with.

Thank you!
