To be honest, I've been hesitant to post my large Ludwig set on this board, because it is the vintage drum forum, and while the drums themselves are 1970s Ludwig vintage, they are modernized with a rack system and modern hardware, and I thought many of the older vintage purists wouldn't like that I had done that to a vintage set. But.......
A few of the members here have requested to see more pics and more info on this set, as it had been briefly shown and mentioned in another thread, so this is for them. If you hate big kits, just keep moving, this isn't for you......
This kit started out as a used 1971 Ludwig Black Panther 6-piece set which I bought in 1987 when I was in high school and over the years grew to the monster you see now. Having started playing drums right in the middle of the 80s rock "hair band" era, that music was very popular at the time and I fell in love with the big drum sets I'd see on MTV videos, so that's how this thing started coming about in my teenage years.
Then, over time I added more and more percussion and different kinds of drums and turned it into a kind of "do it all" home based acoustic kit. I'm so used to banging around with all those drums for so many years that it's actually harder for me to play something like a 5-piece kit now because I'm comfortable with the many tom voices that the 5-pieces don't have.
I do not gig with this thing, it basically is like a piece of artwork that just sits in the house and I get to enjoy looking at it and making all the variety of percussion sounds with it that I love. While it cost a lot to get to this point, I really only have spent a few hundred dollars at a time on it, since I started building it 23 years ago.

A few notes:
- One of the tambourines is not shown in these pics, but it's on there now near my main hi-hat.
- Most all the Zildjian cymbals are 1980s-early 1990s versions.
-Just a month ago I started experimenting with a 3 floor tom set up and found I really like it. I am using my 16-16-18" set up, but if I could find a 14" or 20" Black Panther floor tom (or even a 12x15" normal tom) I would swap out one of the 16"s for it.
-I have thought about making my 10" Black Panther tom double headed, but since it was hard enough to find that 10" tom, I wasn't sure if I should mess with the original vintage drum so as of yet, I have left it as it came.
-Having that mix of Octobans and 12" concert tom over the 3 deeper sounding floor toms can create some really cool patterns, along with a splash cymbal and mini-china cymbal there with some cowbells.
-Early 1990s Pearl drum rack, and probably 80% Pearl hardware all around. The Ludwig double headed toms are all held by Gibraltar percussion mount arms, which perfectly fit the Ludwig L-brackets.
Enough talk....onto the pics!!! Yeah, I haven't cleaned my cymbals in a while, I already know.
