Noob here, I subscribed a few years ago and have been lurking on and off for awhile now. Just wanted to say Hi and to find some information about my vintage Slingerlands that have been sitting in a closet since the mid 90s.

From tsrdrum

Hello there forum,My name is Andrew and this is my introduction. I am 20 years old and I have some drums, many of which could drink before I was born.I started collecting vintage drums with a 1979/1980 Ludwig Supraphonic snare that I got when I was around 14 or 15. It's been my workhorse for the past 5 years, going on tours and shows and recording sessions with me. Recently, I have begun scouring craigslist for cool snares for under $100 and have acquired a '74 Premier Hi-Fi (I think), a '60s Rogers Powertone, and a new Pearl Masters custom snare drum (I know, it's not vintage, but it still sounds rad). I also have a '65 Ludwig 3-piece (13/16/22) that I picked up, also on craigslist. I'm afraid that I am developing a dependence on craigslist, and honestly I'm a little worried that spending a significant time on this forum will turn me into a full-blown vintage drum addict. However, I am willing to take that risk because vintage drums are cool.I'm including some pictures, and I'll be posting some questions about some of my drums which need a little fixin', but I thought I'd introduce myself first. Thanks for reading-Andrew

First of all, Welcome! to your next new addiction. Second, those are some nice drums, too bad someone went to hell with the drill. And Third, DUDE, I want the car!!!!

Let me give you some info about the bass hoops: You have those cheap chromes on there, gotta go. You will notice an immediate improvement in the tone, I promise. Go to this site and order some new woodies, they will make an immeasurable difference in the tone, I'm tellin' ya! Wood hoops are were it's at, and those old 3 ply Luds sound dry and ringy with metal hoops, unless you just like that sound from your bass. Get the 12 ply maple 1 3/4" hoops, they are about 16-17 bucks each plus shipping (I am not in any way associated with them, just like their prices, way more than anyone elses!). You can then have them routed for the silver sparkle inlay to match the drums and you can get the inlays for dirt cheap as well. No need in paying more than 100 bucks for warped, worn out originals, unless you just like burning hundred dollar bills. It will be worth the investment, I can promise that.

www.aitwood.com

Call them in and they will have them to you in about 4 days. Make sure to paint them black and then put the inlay on, unless you like the look of the wood, then just buy the hoops, forget about the inlay and the extra bucks to get them routered, and lacquer, LACQUER the hoops. Don't use poly, it is just not meant for wood drums, it is plastic, lacquer is not.

If you do go with the inlay, AIT will router the hoops for you, at 15/hoop. Unless you are skilled at routering, it is best left to them, I tried....The inlay can be had at many sources, and I think www.drummaker.com or www.precisiondrum.com is your best bet for those.

Hey guys,

I'm 28", and this is my first post here. I'm a regular over at Ghostnote (I can see a few other guys from there are here too). I'm a drummer and a studio engineer who dabbles in bass and guitar as well. I happened upon this forum as I love old dusty vintage stuff. I'm in the process of assembling a mongrel Gretsch kit out of orphan drums right now. So far I've got a 16x16" floor tom and a 9x13" rack. I'm missing a 16x18" ft and a 14x24" or 26" bass drum. When I get a complete kit, the plan is to rewrap them all. But I also love the f*cked up look of orphan drums thrown together, so we'll see...

Anyway, hope to make some friends here. See ya :)

Hey there everyone,

I am new to this site, as of today, and generally new to the world of forums, though I understand how they work just fine. I am a drummer and multi-instrumentalist, who recently decided to finally put some serious effort into my music. I am one of those people who has been able to get by without much practice and do okay musically, but never has reached the potential I have often felt and been told that I have.

In any case, I am here to learn from you all. My father passed away a five years ago, and in his wake he left behind a whole ton of vintage gear and equipment, both electronic and instrumental. Amongst it all, there were a few gems for the drummer in me...

Today I am hoping to gain a little insight about this one snare I have been blessed with. I have spent the afternoon looking at it, researching it, cleaning it up, and fixing some things that were slightly in need of repair. It is an early 60's Slingerland, 3-ply, Artist Model Snare with a White Pearl finish, and a Zoomatic strainer. It bears the Black and Brass Niles Oval Badge (implying it was produced between 63-69). The exciting thing to me is that it is stamped with quite a low (and even) serial number. It was the 1,000th drum produced by slingerland in Niles, Illinois. I would just like to ask you all to fill me in on the significance, if any, of having a drum such as this with a considerably low serial number... I am hoping to discover it's value out of curiosity, though I may never part with it, as it sounds significantly better than any other snare I have ever owned.

Any idea what it is worth?

In any case, it is an honor to be a part of this forum, and I look forward to contributing in any way I can, and I will certainly be turning to you all for assistance as well...

Group Hug

By the way, this is a great emoticon, but the last one I will be using on here...

Yours,

idrumonyou

See? I can do this!

I've lurked here forever, usually in search of information on something, and I finally decided to join. I collect and refurb a little for fun, and generally crave information from people who have it.

And I always land here during a search, so ...

Old PIT Guy.
