Hi everybody. Just found this forum. I've been into vintage drums since before they were vintage (just old). Think I paid $200 for my Ludwig Classic kit back in the 80's and I think I got about half that back selling some stuff I didn't want that came with it. Anyhow looks like lots of info. on here.

Hi all,

I hail from the land down under - Australia. Been a long time lurker on the forum actually.

My collection of vintage gear is modest, but I use it all regularly. I enjoy a challenge, so I often find myself buying the "orphan" drums that nobody else wants.

I'm currently working on piecing together some mid 1950's Slingerland Radio Kings.

Looking forward to chatting with you all,

Dave

I am Greg Hohn, also known as the Drum Doctor to players and industry people here in the Greater Toronto area. I have collected over 40 years of drum related experiences that started out with staight up playing and developed into a solid understanding of the nature of the drum. I am known for my custom drumwork; specifically bearing edge and snare bed design. I have an extensive list of clients in the Toronro area and I am now reaching out through this forum to connect with you. My service includes drum restoration; refinishing in oils, lacqueres and wraps, custom modifications, and on site tuning and maintenance for drum set, timpani, and most ethnic drums.

I am at your service and I invite any questions that you may have.

Best regards.....Greg

Hello all - I am also a newbie here, so here's my quick introduction:

I'm 37 years old, have been playing drums for about 23 years in and around the SF Bay Area my whole career. My first kit was a hodge-podge of Premier and Gretsch drums, of which I still have the 12" Premier tom. Unfortunately, the round badge Gretsch snare was weaseled away from me by a former teacher who knew better about what I had than I did. I traded him for a more modern Gretsch snare and a month of free lessons. What I wouldn't do to have that bad boy back, I loved that thing. But since it was my first snare, I just figured they must all sound this good. This was back in the early-to-mid-90s. But I digress.

Anyhoo, I used to play any old drums (my main kit was a Yamaha Rec Custom fusion kit), up until I made the cardinal sin of leaving my drums in my car oevrnight, and you guessed it - getting them all stolen. I lost a nice 20" MIJ aqua satin-flame kick drum that was a favorite, two snares (both Pearl), a coupla Premier Cabria toms, bag of cymbals, all my hardware.... it was devastating to me.

But I took it as an opportunity to start on a new sound for myself. I bought a 6-pc Ludwig kit (24/13/14/16/18/14x5.5 supra snr), blue/olive badges, 3ply with re-rings and a natural finish. It's a players kit, with lotsa knicks in the finish, some of the toms have dents in the bearing edge, and some of the hardware is ... not right. But I bought a 2nd matching kick off ebay (6ply no re-rings) for a double bass rig a la Ginger Baker or later Hendrix-period Mitch Mitchell. The kit lives in my rehearsal space, and I usually only gig with a 4-pc or Bonham-style configuration.

I presume the kit is from the 70's - I've yet to find any stamps. I wonder if it ever had a wrap. The seams overlap on the shells, not diagonally cut and butted together the way the 2nd kick is. But I love the open sound they have. I've also since purchased a 6.5" deep Super-Sensitive snare that seems to fit the bigness of this setup.

I also own three different Premier kits; one is a jazz configuration Resonator kit, the other I forget what it may have been called - but it looks like mahogany shells with birch re-rings. It sounds fantastic. Then I have a mix-n-match kit with an 18" Cabria kick and matching snare, plus two Premier toms, 10" and 14", in a similar finish. Finally, my gigging set is a refurb job I picked up off craigslist: a lower-end Yamaha kit re-cut/-wrapped by Thumper Custom. Here's the pics:

jazzy Resonators in-studio (extra flr tom in back is an old Pearl):

rockin' Premiers, blk cordia wrap, also note 18" deep 16" flr tom:

the Premier Frankenstein kit:

Thumper Customs (or, my "Poor Man's Gretsch kit"). Also, I should note I have an 18" and 20" kick to go with the toms:

.... and that's all I got, folks. Hope to be able to contribute and learn from this place. Cheers!

Hi Im new to this forum, and wish to say hellow all !

I joined for a reason and that is to find out [ Who, What, When, Where, Why.] about my kit.

I have a Slingerland kit maid at the Illinois factory, I have resurched it and found nothing except about the factory.

The kit is vynal coverd and that makes it hard. The only info is about applyed coatings, such as paint, glosses, and baked coatings. NOT VYNAL.

Can someone help its driving me crazy?!!

P.S. I think its a three-ply kit

Just joined and was encouraged to sign into the Introductions Forum - guess this is it. Been playing some drums off & on for a few years - getting back into it now by playing with a group and working to update my vintage kit - so I'll probably be on asking lots of questions.

Right now my focus in getting my mounted toms to stop spinning - so any clues would help. It's a vintage Slingerland bass with Ludwig mounted toms. The mount on the bass has ridges to hold the pole in place - but - my pole is smooth so it just spins. Figure I either got the wrong pole on this kit or there is a memory lock with fingers that go down into the mount. Any tips are appreciated.

Sorry, don't have pics - but the Ludwig tom mount seems pretty common - I've looked at several on ebay and they all look the same: 4 bolts hold it to the bass drum and a single pole up to the hardware where the toms actually mount. I've also seen that all the other poles are smooth round, too - so I'm guessing that the memory lock must have some "fingers" that go down into the tom mount to lodge against the ridges that are built in. Any help is appreciated - really can't play a lot 'cause the toms spin around. thanks
