star crystalite?

From Ralf

It's amazing. Guess the seller doesn't have the faintest idea of what he is presenting here ...I don't know whether STAR acrylics crack as Sonor's (and all others) may do. That would be the only doubts for me before bidding.Concerning the missing tom holder: I know some addresses, where they could be found (besides Mikey, who would be the first to ask for me). And perhaps it's still inside at the other tom? Can't see it through the dust of the centuries on it.:pRalf

Hey thanks for all the info guys! Nice to see the potential of these drums!

Pretty hard to see what's underneath all that grime, hopefully there will be some more pics posted so I can see if there's any cracks.

Concerning cracks:

If you really wonna go into deep, you need to take of all lugs.

I have my doubts that the seller would do you this favour ...

Saw that one Trev, looks like a diamond in the rough? Sure looks like an early Star/Tama kit – they didn't always have a matching clear snare drum so it could be native to the kit – most likely a COS

There is no doubt they are Star. This is a hard to find kit in the US, and I imagine in NZ they are like finding a set of Luds, or Rogers. I have seen many of these kits, and not one has had cracks, unkless it is abused. This one looks like it sat in the barn for the last 20 years. They are from about 70-73. Not a long build time as they would be in the end of Star and the early days before TAMA.

Wow, that kit is so sweet - yikes. Watch out wallet.

Concerning cracks- I own a Ludwig Vistalite 12x8 tom that was seriously cracked and just expertly repaired by a fiberglass ship builder. The sound is so good now that I can`t imagine it changed at all from it`s original. Here`s a pic. I think cracks can be repaired on theses acrylics. Come to think of it I also have a Pearl vistalite 8x6 concert tom that has been properly repaired as well- no problems to report. I you can get a good deal on rare acrylics that are cracked then I say they can be salvaged IMO.

I once found a tom tom with what appeared to be Camco lugs on it, but it wasn't Camco. I put it on eBay and it sold, but the shell was clear and much thinner than Vistalite. One eBayer said they thought it was Hayman. I had never heard of Haymans.. Later alleviated that problem with a purchase of a complete Hayman set in gold, later sold. They are fantastic drums.

That Star set looks cool. Gotta dig the only pointy-teardrop offset lugs on the rack tom! I had an Apollo set in Blue satin flame about a year ago that was the same config as that one. That is rare.

Ok cheers! Here's a couple of more pics still pretty hard to tell if there's any cracks. You'd think they'd wipe them down with a towel. What do you guys think?
