ringos beatle cymbals

Loading...

Hey Guys, this is a great thread.

There has been a change in the drum line up for the Ringo exhibit. Ringo is supplying his second Downbeat kit (Ed Sullivan/AHDN), his maple kit, one of his All Starr kits and his gold plated snare. His second Super Classic kit will not be included as it was decided that the kits first mentioned will tell a more complete story based on the room that the exhibit has.

I'm not sure how things will pan out in the cymbal department but we'll see. I do know that Ringo has "his favorite 18" Beatle cymbal" hanging on the wall of his home recording studio. Apparently it cracked and he finally stopped using it. He also retired his hi hats. I was surprised to learn that he was still using them.

If things work out, I will get cymbal weights and document the cymbal stamps. Hopefully, I will also be able to get the stamp dates on the drums and measure the snare drum.

Concerning the hi-htas, this from Jim Keltner:

"We then went up on stage behind his drums and showed me his cymbals. At that time, he was using two old A. Zildjians (I believe 20″s) on his left and right and some old 14″ A. Zildjian hi-hats. He said, “These two cymbals are from the mid 1960s and the hi-hats are from 1960.” I said, “So these hi-hats were used on-” and Ringo said, “They were used on all the records.” It’s widely believed that Ringo played 15″ hi-hats on at least the first Beatles record, but these hi-hats were definitely 14″s and he said they’d been used on all the Beatles records, so again, who was I to argue with a Beatle!"

Ringo states that his hi-hats were 1960 vintage. I believe that would have to mean that the actual period of manufacture was earlier as is always the case when buying stock inventory from music shops. In some cases this time disparity can be considerable. I bought an 18" trans stamp from a drummer who claims that he bought it new in 1970. I also know a drummer who purchased a Gretsch kit new in 1963

and bought a 1950's K old stamp "new" at the same time. These examples are common.

Jim Keltner also said this:

"Ringo always played a beautiful Paiste 602 crash-ride, and his hi-hats are 14″ Zildjians that are so old you can barely see any logo."

I don't know if that means Ringo played that 602 with the Beatles, but if so that's collapses some of our theories about the 20" he played. I had read that Mal Evans bought Ringo a 20" at Manny's on their first tour, so from that I always believed that his 20" was an A. But for me the real take away here this is Jim's description of the trademark on Ringo's hi-hats. Jim's description of the trademarks on Ringo's hi-hats as being, "so old you can barely see any logos", sounds like a description of what trans stamp trademarks would look from the perspective of someone who is unfamiliar with cymbal trademarks.

This is a photo of Ringo's first Ludwig kit in June of 1963. You can't really make it out from this photo, but from a printed shot that I have of this same photo it can be seen that the 18" shown here is not the same 18" Zildjian that he played for most of the rest of his career with the Beatles, but an earlier one. This cymbal has 4 rivet holes in it and also looks to be heavier.

My own personal opinion is that the hi-hats and the later 18" were both trans stamps.

Ringo's cymbals always seem to be a mystery. Sound wise,,,,,I can't argue your tran stamp theory. Those sloshy hats are classic

I agree looks heavier and is 1 out of 3 18'' Zildjian's he used. Man, that would be great if we could get the weights and shots from the museum. Hopefully he takes the cracked one off the wall!

Has anyone noticed on this pic you can actually see inside Ringo's Jazz Fest and the interior and it looks like it isn't painted white, just natural wood. Like mentioned before, could it be an older shell that was grabbed that was 5.5 deep, clear interior and , fitted with red felt ball bat, pre serial badge, etc.

Then again it looks white in one of the previous upward angle shots and this one is in color (one of the pics on the first page of this topic)
