1st method. band clamps....FAIL.

many wrinkles.

heat gun and veneer hammer to the rescue.....almost.

veneer is very tight on now but.....

At least it's on the back of the floor tom on a lug line.

have to splice in a piece so I won't have to fill.

Lessons learned:

-white glue mite seem like it takes a while to set when yer gluein the leg on a chair but rolled out on a drum and sheet of veneer, it takes no time to dry

-even when you think you got it all figgered out, there's still the learning curve

LOVIN the grain in this wood though.

Do better on next piece.

They make an inner bladder to put inside circular objects to equalize the pressure when using a vacuum bag. And yes it will crush a drum.

As an experiment, we put a 1/2 board on 2 boards and it broke. I don't remember the span, but it wasn't much...

Looks great I think. So you tried band clamps, then the vac bag? I didnt realixe those things were that strong. Ya, the veneer is beautiful!

Butt joints are hard to do with veneer. When I did my Rockers I let the veneer overlap about a hlf inch then cut it lenght after it was glued to the shell. It works good with the grain veritical but horizontal is better with it lapped, in my oppinion. Keep up the good work!

Tried vac bagging today.

FAIL

Not enuf open time with PVA for this.

Maybe with a retarder/extender or thinning the glue with water(mite affect adhesion) but it's not gonna work for me SO......

Looks like it's either jccabs way:contact cement(can't find stuff jc uses in Canada and no other suitable stuff available locally.

OR

What I'm doing now: PVA, heat gun and veneer hammer.

This method seems to be working well. Veneer is going on very tite with no bubbles or wrinkles, so I think I'll continue on this way.

Lookin good my friend! I always wondered about those vac bags, they don't look easy, I bet it takes some time to get the hang of using it. So, now I cant remember, what is the finish going to be?
