Don't find you nosey at all JC.

Happy you're interested. I can use all the advice I can get. Kinda jumpin into the darkness here as I have never done anything like this before.

Basically, I want this look.

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/x/karelian-birch-10113902.jpg

The pieces I ordered don't have quite as many black spots as this example.

but I want it to look like Sonor did it. Vertical like all the rosewood ones you see.

I really fell in love with the way this wood looks like flames but it's natural.

I ordered enuf extra that I can play with application and staining techniques before I do the actual kit.

The reasons for the PVA are:

long open time.

ability to fix bubbles with a clothes iron.

clear glue lines(I'm using white type 2 PVA)

since the veneer is 1/42" thick, any bleed thru is much easier to hide.

environmentally friendly.

the only thing I'm a bit nervous about is PVA's reputation for joint creep but hopefully it won't be much of an issue with this application.

I like using lacquer for finish coats because it can be repaired, it buffs out nice and it can be waxed.

You may find the post-link below useful. I wrapped a yamaha set with wood veneer using slow set yellow glue. To hold the veneer in place while the glue dried, i used stretch-film like this...

It worked very well.

I LIKE the plastic shipping wrap technique. I can maybe see a future in that

I'm very familiar with that stuff.

Thanx for the tip.

Very cool.

Will look into that as well.

Gonna try a few methods.

Nice thing about doin the veneer in vertical strips is I get to test different methods.

Hopefully, I'll have some good data for others who may try this, and just MAYBE, I'll stumble across "THE" way to do this type of thing.

How thick was you veneer A.P?

I think it was this one...

http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2000688/18256/Maple-Veneer-4'-x-8'---10-mil.aspx

Very thin, paper backed if i recall.

If you choose this method, you must leave the stretch film on for a long time, several days would be a good idea. The glue dries plenty fast, but not when it is encapsulated in plastic wrap.

10 mil.

yeah. that's about the same thickness I'm getting.

Gonna try band clamps, vac bagging, sand bags with weight, screw clamps with strapping(because I can do this in sections), and now your method.

Most important thing for me is that the veneer goes on as tight as possible.

Like factory.

I want a nice looking set of shells but the sound is THE most important thing to me.

I want no loose wrap to cause bass traps and screw up my resonance.

Im still here!

Cant wait to see how this goes. I have done three kits all with contact cement and its so easy, no clamps, no vaccume, no shrink wrap no mess, easy. Did 10 drums over a weekend. That was two years ago, no issues, no bubbles or voids, drums sound great. I had never applied veneer on a drum before so I simply asked my hardwoods supplier how the veneer guys (cabinet re-facers) adhere their veneer. The answer was this aresol adhesive, it was called Con-Bond at the time but they changed names. The only thing you have to be aware of is that it is an instant bond, once you start wrapping you cant pull it back to straighten it out.

I also have a detailed thread on how I veneered my Rogers kit, I can look it up for you if you want. Again Im not suggesting you do this "my way" at all, I just want to share my experience with you guys. Nothing wrong with how you guys go about it at all, I hope you keep us posted on the progress.

Absolutely. I'd love to see a link.

Got any current info on that aerosol cement.

Be nice to see if I can get it here in Canada.

I have two adhesives from different suppliers. They both do the same thing. THey spray a nice 4" wide pattern. You might have to go to a cabinet shop or something to get them, Im pretty sure its not sold to the general public and that might be a problem for you. I would think a hardware store would have contact adhesive in a gallon can, you could use a roller to apply that also. Good luck to ya!

So the veneer is here and it's gorgeous. Really nice stuff.

Everything's on hold till I decide what's gonna happen with that 24" kick so I'm storing the sheets in a press.

KK

my veneer was a lil wavy for my liking so I took a stab at the flattening procedure tonite.

Numbered and wetted all the sheets on both side with a spray bottle of 8parts water, 1.5 parts methyl hydrate and 1.5 parts glycerin.

Put it all back in the press with sheets of blank newsprint between each sheet.

I'll check things tomorrow morning.

Hopefully I can start to glue tomorrow nite.
