Does anyone have ANY information at all on Black Jack kits? All I know is that they were made in Japan.

Anybody out there ever play one?

Any and all feedback would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

In my fading memory I think I saw one which was a C'list sale a few years ago. My recollection is it appeared to be a Pearl-made kit....

I remember seeing Black Jack kits for sale EVERYWHERE-and very different and variable quality levels-from reasonably playable to unbelievable garbage.Daddys Junky Music here in N.E.had one on their closeout website recently.Red sparkle, which every one I ever saw was,6 or 9 ply luan with grey painted interiors. No rerings on this one,but I remember ones from high-school era(early 70's) being one or two ply with rerings, the most primitive construction possible, not even sanded edges and insta-break snare throwoff. From the factory with flat head screws to adjust tom height and spurs.

By the way,the Daddys set was a good one-8 lug bass-a fun playable cheapie.

There was a listing on the bay recently for 2 complete red sparkle kits. Sold as a single auction for like 100 bucks. They appear to be from Star, but I wouldn't stake anything on it. They have all the proper hardware.

THANKS for the input thus far. I appreciate your time and the information that's been provided.

I've got a chance to pick up a Black Jack Blue Sparkle kit (see pics) for $60.00. Included in the sale will be a vintage Ludwig Speed King Pedal, vintage Ludwig Hi-Hat Stand, bass drum cymbal mount & L-arm, Pearl throne, a ride cymbal (a "cheapie" I imagine) and two hi-hat cymbals.

What do you think? Would you buy or pass on this one?

Hey!!! That one looks exactly like the "unidentifeid" kit im about to restore (see thread, "restoring an unidentified 60s drumkit"). Is the counterhoops for the kickdrum made of plastic?

Yep-I'd do it.The pedal and hi hat are worth that.2-screw cymbal mount is common on the better iteration of Black Jack drums.Hoops on these drums were made of a softer wood-very prone to splitting and pedal damage.

If you don't want it let me know I'll take it! That is a deal. The Hi-hat ius worth that!

And if you just want the hardware, I'll take the rest, although I'd rather have the whole package. If you going to flip them, in any config I'm interested. The floor tom may be a 3 ply shell. I looked at the rail, and it appears to be the same as my Majestics, which is Star's high end stuff. Look identical from here. Let us know what they are made of.

I'll be picking everything up this afternoon at 5:30. At this point I doubt that I'd have any interest in the kit itself. However, I guess that I should hold judgement on that until I actually see the pieces in person.

I'll keep you updated.

Picked up the kit yesterday afternoon and cleaned it up somewhat. I attached several pics. I think, over-all, it turned out pretty nice. Obviously, the heads on the bass drum need to be replaced. The Ludwig Speed King Pedal & Hi-Hat stand are currently being cleaned, so they're not in any of the pics.

The kit will be "moved" in the near future although I'm not sure whether I'm going to keep or sell the Ludwig pieces.
