And did you check out the head choice? Rocker Heavy Coated, and Silver Dot....must have had some wicked overtone....

Or someone doesn't know how to tune a drum. Also, those Rocker heads have a way of turning up as head replacements on old drums.

Wouldn't know anything about that  I only found 2 drums worth on the last set of Luds I bought....and I do think I'll keep them. 13 &14 Heavy Clear Resos and Silver dots for the tops are going to look good on something I have around here, I'm sure....flowers2

Just looking for a thread to show my Black Jack kit

Of all the stencil drums I have found These are by far the nicest and most complete.

I would lean toward Star being the maker based on hardware and badges

Kenwood,

Great looking kit. I am curious as to what is going on with the batter head on the floor tom though.

I would agree that those BDP's are Star drums The Black Jacks I remember had a very similar badge, but no "Deluxe".Also sharktooth lugs and very primitive wood hoops, like they were barely sanded.

I had an MIJ kit that I bought new in the fall of 1967 at Lechmere Sales in Cambridge, MA. For a long time I couldn't recall if they were Black Jack or LaBoz (I am pretty sure the latter), but I think the confusion may have been that I had another snare drum and one time that might have been a Black Jack. I also had a Howard. I recall the snare drum of the LaBoz kit and the Howard were pretty much the same with a larger round strainer and the lugs on all the drums were essentially a Slingerland repro. The thing that still bothers me is the script I see on all the LaBoz drums. I thought I recall and oval badge, and now I see the Black Jack has a shield style and I don't recall that at all either.

Has anyone else had a Black Jack with differing badge, or a LaBoz that didn't have the script logo or even a Howard??

I have a Black Jack kit in Blue Onyx that is 3 ply with re-rings. It has the same exact double tom mount as Kenwood's, but only a single 8" x 12" tom on the bass drum.

I polyurethaned the interiors (then 000 Steel Wooled them) and these drums sound awesome. One of my favorite kits!

Hello and thanks tnsquint

I have a few cosmetic details left with my Black Jacks

One is new rubber feet for the spurs

another is finding a suitable black diamond pearl inlay

for the batter side hoop

I found the drums on Cape Cod they were being used by

a fellow to give youngsters drum lessons

When I bought them, the kit had no resonant side heads or hoops

save for the snare of course

I moved the one fully intact batter side hoop on the bass drum

forward for the reso side

Then I found another partial Black Jack kit (just a bass and the two mount toms)

Identical to mine, save for these being wrapped in orange sparkle

These drums were also missing all the reso side hoops and hardware

so I used the hoops from those donor shells

to make the Black Diamond Pearl's complete

the only shortcomming being I was still short a BDP inlay

I have a random bdp inlay which was not a good enough match

sitting loose on top of the floor tom

...That is most likely what looks weird about the floor tom in the picture

Dan Boucher hello

Somewhere here in my boneyard of old drum shells

I have a 14 inch silver sparkle floor tom with the club date style lugs

That drum shell has the oval shaped Black Jack badge you remember

I sold tvs vcrs and camcorders for Lechmere here in Warwick from 90-96
