Blair is technically correct though... it might be safer to use a rubber mallet to strike the ball-peen hammer. Giving it a single whack is good enough for my purposes. But Blair is right nonetheless.

If your going to strike a steel head hammer against another steel headed hammer make sure you are wearing saftey glasses, a metal fragment from one of the hammers could break off and fly into your eye possibly killing you. Like the Little kid in A Christmas Story shooting his eye out, lol

John the drums are looking great. I missed this thread earlier for some reason. Took a while to read all of the comments. Your wife picked out a very nice wrap, now go pat her on the back!

Jeff - I can think of at least three other places I'd rather pat her to show my gratitude. lol

Bass drum is coming together nicely. Here's a couple of shots. Still a work in progress, but I'm real happy with the wrap and how it looks on the drums. Merlot is a classy finish. Precision will sell a lot of that stuff! It's a hot color.

Floor tom dropped at the Post Office this afternoon...it came to me a week ago with a kick drum that has nine...yes, nine extra holes, and two toms that have extra holes and severe bearing edge damage. Y'all pray that it works as perfectly for John as I am hoping it will. The floor tom is a 3 ply drum with original silver interior...the other three drums are 6 ply with the interiors (screws, washers, and all) painted black...the floor tom really being the only drum that was salvageable...I never thought I would like the merlot better than tangerine, but John should give the little mrs. a kiss for her selection of that finish....absolutely beautiful. John, I have 8 lugs available from the kick drum...I will have a look at them, and if they are in better shape than the F T lugs, we can swap out. I am glad this is coming together for you...have a great weekend.

Man, I am so looking forward to adding the floor tom to the kit. It couldn't be more perfect, the tom is a Brooklyn 3-ply and so are the other drums in my kit. It's like re-uniting a family. I couldn't be happier, or more pleased and grateful, with how the Universe conspired to bring this kit together.

You da man, Mr. Bill! You made it happen. Cool1

When I finish this kit, I'm going to knock you guys on your collective a$$es with photos of some killer drums.

I'm psyched.

John...it's crazy how the kit came to me...the rail mount was moved (extra holes on the kick) to add the 12 to the 13...then a Gibraltar mount was added (more holes all around) , the bearing edges on the small toms hacked up badly (appears they were carried in the floor tom, allowing the flr tom muffler to gouge and cut them up)...all around, the floor tom was a different animal, being 3 ply, and missing out on the extra holes and black paint inside.....a perfect fit for your kit... I am glad it is coming together...I figure as fast as you work, we will be seeing pics...what? ...probably in a week?

Have a great weekend ( I know you are amped up...you probably won't sleep until the drum arrives). Cool Dude

Here are some shots of where I am with the bass drum. It's finished except for a batter head which I hope to add by Monday. The hardware on the bass drum polished up beautifully. It's pitted, but it took a great shine and you can't see it. Everything looks shiny new. The only thing I did not add back to the bass drum is that funky internal felt strip muffler. I restored the mechanism, but I didn't put the felt strip back. I have the original for safe-keeping.

Three down, one to go... stay tuned.

Enjoy,

Correction: I meant to say, 'batter head' not reso.
