50's Gretsch Round Badge Restoration

Ok, time to show off the rack tom...

I'm detailing all the tension rods/T-rods at one time, so they're not on the drums yet. But they look pretty cool and I wanted to show them off. I'll work on the bass drum Tuesday.

Great news! It looks like I've found a floor tom for the kit! It's a perfect candidate too. The drum is complete except for a bottom hoop and t-rods. There is also a dinger on the exposed bottom bearing edge that I'll have to attend to, but otherwise it's complete and original. The WMP wrap it has is lifting so I don't feel guilty about the rewrap. The VDF member I'm getting it from is a really nice guy and I have enjoyed meeting him and spending time on the phone. Good vibes all around. He's happy, I'm happy, and the kit gets the floor tom it was crying out for. Win/win!

Here's some shots of the tom. 9"x13" 3-ply Gretsch

Those are sharp!

Now you're making me second guess my recent Blue Glass Glitter wrap purchase. ;)

There's just something about the contrast between the Burgundy Sparkle wrap and the chrome hardware. They really compliment each other.

Dang it! Anyone want to buy some Blue Glass Glitter wrap sized for a Gretsch Progressive Jazz kit (minus snare)? CryBaby

I can't wait for the pictures of the complete kit.

I got the same hit when I started assembling the snare drum. I think I mentioned it earlier. But yes, for some reason the chrome looks great against the burgundy. I'm loving the way they're coming out.

John excellent job my friend. This wrap color is really growing on me! I like it more each time I see it. Congrats on the floor tom too nice score on that pup.

Hey if any of that old WMP wrap is salvageable please let me know if your going to sell it. If not no problem.

You know I'm kicking myself in the ass for not being in a better position to buy that radio king snare you had for sale in the green glass sale. I could use it now. LOL oh well.

Keep up the good work!

From what I've been told, the wrap has lifted on the floor tom. I'll have to see it first, but if I can get the wrap off in one piece, I'll be happy to gift it to you so you can use it on your drum. Freebee, I'm happy to know nothing will be going to waste! I don't expect to have the tom in my hands for at least a week, the guy can't ship until the week-end or later. But as soon as I see what the deal is, I'll let you know. PM me your mailing info, if the wrap can be saved, it's yours.

This is a great way of recycling vintage drum materials!

Outstanding job so far! That color is classic and is going to make for an amazing set of drums when you’re done. Not to mention giving new life to some of the best drums on the planet. To me, this sparks an interesting point...clearly anyone associated with this forum would vocally defend a serviceable original wrap over a rewrap. If an alteration is driven only by someone not liking a color or a less-than-perfect finish, better to sell an original to somebody else who appreciates it and find something you like.

But when it comes to a situation like this, I for one think there is a huge advantage of a rewrapped Gretsch RB from the 50’s or 60’s over a new kit – purely as an instrument. I have one myself and you just can’t replicate the warmth of shells that have been curing for 40 or 50 years. So while I’m in no way advocating ripping up good condition collectable classic drums, I do think that the value of thoughtfully rewrapped snares and kits will only go up in the future for people wanting to play them who might otherwise buy something new at Guitar Center. Particularly as the “time capsules” get harder and harder to find. Probably stating the obvious here but Purdie Shuffle’s fantastic rescue got me thinking.

Can’t wait to see these beauties all done up.

Wow thanks John. I'll gladly cover shipping and something for your trouble if the wrap can be saved and reused. You Da Man~! ;)

Your kit is going to be a real sweety when it's finished!! Looks like your having a blast working on them.

Nothing to add, just gotta say that I think I'm liking burgundy more than tangerine now. ;)
