Please ask away, there are no stupid questions when it comes to a 50 year old drum set.
How it was explained to me (from this tech/friend of Krupa's) was that if BR was to get a bass drum that had the stock mount locations already drilled, his tech was the one who's job it was to move them.
Those heads are not original, I replaced them to play on in my teen years a few times not thinking about what the future would hold for these.
And I really can't say about the bass drum, they have all been in cases for some time, the only thing I can think of is that the toms caught more light earlier in the 70's/80's when I had them set up in my childhood home, but the evenness of the color value might speak against that.
