1968 Buddy Rich Played Slingerlands

Please ask away, there are no stupid questions when it comes to a 50 year old drum set.

How it was explained to me (from this tech/friend of Krupa's) was that if BR was to get a bass drum that had the stock mount locations already drilled, his tech was the one who's job it was to move them.

Those heads are not original, I replaced them to play on in my teen years a few times not thinking about what the future would hold for these.

And I really can't say about the bass drum, they have all been in cases for some time, the only thing I can think of is that the toms caught more light earlier in the 70's/80's when I had them set up in my childhood home, but the evenness of the color value might speak against that.

I was talking to Columbo last night and he wanted me to ask,...

If Slingerland did not drill for mufflers on the rack tom and smaller floor tom,...Why would they drill for cymbal mounts only to have them moved ? Slingerland built the kit for his specs, which is why they did not drill for the mufflers.

Oh, and one more thing,....That BD head should look like this now....

There is documentation that Rich wanted a Slingy kit for Carson and it was to stay there because buddy played Carson all the time, so there may have been two.

Carson would get it factory ordered for sure. He's was big on vintage kits and there values.

It's an excellent question, one I posed myself to Donn Bennett. A possibility, perhaps, is that a BD was needed stat and that was all that was available from Slingerland short notice? I don't know. But, Dan Santefort told me to look for this modification without having seen pictures of it, from that I assume it was something that he had seen done.

As far as the head goes, you mean the signature or crappy? I wish the BD head looked like that, with an autograph all of my leg work would be solved!

Also, I found this other screen grab from a different part of the show, you can see the Slingerland badge on the FT in this picture.

In that first picture I posted of him playing, it looks as though the tom was turned towards him about 40* given where the leg hardware is.

I already did that math and it pans out. It would be one panel to the right of the leg near the BD pedal. Not visible. Allows for a cymbal stand to be placed close.

The NBC kit was first sold for 39,000 and the BD head was autographed.

If yours is the West Side Story kit, those bolts are not on it in the video. The cymbal mounts are not where the factory would have them. But then again, the wrap is 20 years newer on that BD you have.

If it's any good news, the West Side kit had a wood snare that was replaced with a metal one at some time.

Has anyone seen Tommy P ?

Would you mind clarifying, can you see clearly on the video I posted what is going on on the bass drum, I blew it up on my TV and could barely make it out.... or is there another West Side Story Kit that you are referring to?

I will get my hard copy of this Kraft Show this weekend and look at it more closely and post pics if warranted, unless you have a good quality DVD of this performance, have seen the evidence and then I don't have to.

"But then again, the wrap is 20 years newer on that BD you have."

Newer than what? So you are talking about a different kit? I'm confused, I thought BR started performing West Side Story in the mid sixties on MANY different kits.

Stop the video at 5:58, you get a clean shot at the side of the BD with a cymbal mount and no bolts showing. Yes my monitor is HD. I can enlarge it too. Nothing even resembles two bolts.

Yes I am talking about the BD in your pic. There's no way that wrap is the same as the other drums. The collagen has already come through the film on the older one's. That's the yellowing.

I really don't know exactly how many Slingerland kits Buddy used. That should not be too difficult to track down though.

I'd love to see a screen shot, because I stopped it at that point and saw this

I know the quality sucks, but looked like a carriage bolt head to me but could just as easily be light in the finish.

I would be very happy to admit defeat though and say that mine is a doppleganger bass drum head to the one hes playing.

As far as the BD goes, it has not been recovered since me taking ownership in 1977.
