Auto shop guy lives 3 hours away and is really busy. My buddy is in the process of asking about it. Probably going to be a few weeks at least.

Hey Adam,

I have a identical snare to yours. I bought this off of ebay about a yr ago. It was covered in leapord contact paper and had a ludwig keystone badge. I got it for cheap since it was such a odd ball combination. When I got it I inspected it, posted pics of it inside and out and the forum led me to discover it was in fact a 1961 Radio King Student Snare. The "M" stamped on the inner shell indicated it was a natural finished drum. Kevins had one excatly like it and showed me pics. After much searching and researching I restored it back to its original state. it turned out beautiful and I am very proud of it. Dont be scared to remove a badge, Its no big deal if you by a grommet tool from oldkentuckydrums on ebay. I have all sorts of grommet tools at my shop, but nothing works better that this one. I dont know how much mine is worth and dont care. It's priceless to me, because its totally original and I restored it to that condition.

Wait...so was your outside ply mahogany or maple? Did you stain the maple mahogany in color or did you just sand and clear coat the mahogany? Mine definitely has the M stamp on the inside, but it is maple on the outside. I am confused!

Thanks for sharing a beautiful drum poppy! Nice work!

What I have come to believe, and I haven't heard this anywhere, just my take on the deal, is that a "P" stamp means the drum was going to be wrapped. And that would almost always have a Mahogany exterior. A "M " stamp would mean that if it were a Maple exterior it was to be a painted finish, and if it were a Mahogany exterior, then it's a very good looking one, and could be given a natural mahogany finish.

I could be totally wrong, but that is my take on it.

So both a maple and mahogany exterior could have a "M" stamp if those were the determining factors.

Poppy's drum, and my sister drum to his are both mahogany exteriors with a "M" stamp, and a natural mahogany finish.

But my '63 Duco finished Student RK has an "M" stamp, and is maple exterior.

Still waiting on a painter...it has just been sitting on my dining room table waiting to go. Hoping by the end of the month it will be done.
