Glenn,
If you have a rough idea of the size no need to unpack. Less than an inch or more? Need to know which way the the patch will go. With grain or against. Other than than that should be no issues.

No it's quite a bit larger. I just measured the area and it's 2.5" wide by 10" long. The 10" goes around the shell.
Don't have a piece that big, sorry. The Woodcrafters store sells a 1/16th" x 3"x 24" Mahogany. Panel.
It is a lighter colored Mahogany then the original. The Woodcrafter stores also have a color match system for stains that should be able to match somewhat close.

Hey that's ok and thank you for the offer!! Very nice of you. I'll check out woodcrafters and have a look. Thanks!
Thanks for the Woodcraft tip. I saw the 3"x24"x1/6" there for $7. That should work just fine.
Well put the subject drum somewhat back together for a visiting friend. He has a bit of a heavy foot but it held up well with no signs of the old wounds opening. Think I'll go ahead and spend the time/money to finish it out.
Noticed the surviving original hoop was 1 1/2" wide. Does this help the experts sort if this was a tom. Bass or a be-bop bass?
Thanks for any and all help.
