Just want to get this done. Can't play the kit cause the toms mount to the bass. Have decided best to refinish all 7 drums at once. Some are oak shell. Kit is going to look a bit mismatched when done but I don't care. Will post pis as it goes. Gonna be one hell of a beavertail lug polishing marathon.

Don't like gloves when sanding. Can't get a good grip and when they get caught in the sander hell of a mess. Have you found any gloves that work? Thanks!!

Your doing a good job. Your repairs look good. Keep it up. It's nice to see someone really working to save an old drum.
Well,
Once the layers of paint and 80 grit sanded gold sparkle wrap were removed. Have reached a point where I'm not sure what this drum was/is.
Thus a problem of what to do next. It is 20"x16". 16 small beavertail lugs with claw grabs on Oak rims. No badge.
There are 4 sets of 4 holes all drilled at 12/3/6/9 O'clock looking from the top. These look factory. Did the Be-Bop kits have 4 holes per leg?

It might be a 20" floor tom shell? I just got one myself and it's 20" dia by 16" depth. It used 4 leg mounts so that would maybe match some of the holes on yours? Mine looks to have had streamline lugs on it by the witness marks. It was wrapped in WMP that'sw long gone but still tucked in the seam. It's a MASSIVE shell for a floor tom~! The strange thing on mine is 9 lugs on each side, 18 total. If you can post a few pics that would be cool. Sounds like a real interesting shell. What's the plys made of?

Looks like 2.5" hole space for the leg mounts which is correct. Maybe they were moved at some point? I was mistaken mine had the large beavertails not streamliners. What do the re rings measure? Mine are 1 5/8" which show the same as a bass drum shell in the guide here. But maybe the 20" tom shells had the wider rings? I don't know much about them sorry it's a first for me too. We'll learn together. Mark Cooper is really sharp on the RK stuff maybe he'll see this and chime in. Mine is mahogany inside and out too. Maple re rings but not sure what the inner ply is maybe poplar? I'm pretty certain with a 16" depth it would be a floor tom vs a bass shell. Wouldn't the bass drum shells be 14" or 12" depth? Cool shell none the less what are your plans?
I'm measuring the edge of the re-ring that is attached to the shell. That is 1" 3/4. Is this the correct way to measure? Maple re-rings. Just outers, no middle. The inner ply is a fairly soft white wood.
These sure look like factory holes. On the inside ply a lug washer fits perfect into indents for the middle two holes. The top holes look to have had a slightly larger washer.
I was going to dowel plug these. They are just filled with spackling or putty now.
Going to clear gloss the outside. Since this shell is already drilled for my Pearl dual tom mount it will be a bass.
With no badge or hole for one suspect this was indeed a tom. Just don't know if the Be-Bop vertical bass would have had a badge.

That'll make a nice bass drum. Mine looks like it had a consolette at some point. So guess it was used as a bass too. Sounds like our shells could be twins. My re rings could be closer to 1 3/4" too. I need to measure more exact in the next day or so. Pretty cool stuff. Mine is missing a small patch of outer ply mahogany. I guess when the wrap was removed she gave some up. I might patch it with mahogany veneer..... we'll see. Yep I'm sure we'll both find out more about them hopefully~!

Send me a PM with the size of the missing area and a mailing address. Have chunks of mahogany ply off a 40's Duncan Stife table that are spot on match. To mine anyway.
My searches have turned up that Dark African Mahogany was used. Woodcrafters didn't have that available. I'm sure it can be bought but could very well be spendy.

Same here. It's long gone. Grrrr....
Other than lug count they do seem to be twins.
