Slingy that has seen better days.

Think about all that can be done is stabilize the wood layers with glue and fill with mag. color putty. Open for idea's. Great board here.

Lucky the rest of the kit is not bad at all :-)

Thanks!

Had a slingerland bass drum with a similiar situation. Like you said, I glued down the shards and used some Elmer's gouge repair filler and a plastic spatula to fill the small grooves in the wood and hand sanded until I got the shell all smooth and even. Worked great and was ready for a wrap.

Maybe a single, thin bit of fiberglass mesh on the inside of the shell? Wonder if that would kill tone...

Thanks to all that responded!

What I have is a 16x20 small lug shell that has taken some water damage to cause the layers to separate. Hoping to get this stabilized. Going with gradual clamping to get the I can't spell fer chit so Mag. is the magony layer glued back to the shell. Then will deal with filling the voids. Only hoping for advice of anyone that had been down this road before. Got that, thanks much.

Fiberglass mesh could effect the tone but doubt by much. Hope I don't need to go that route. Here's a pic of some of the other shells.

Heads have been replaced on the 1914 pat. Duplex snare.

Still searching for where to buy calfs for the slingys.

How is the shell on the inside, (underside of that messy separation) ?

Pic?

Cheers

Is that a 15" Concert King snare you are using as a tom?

What a great idea! I've never considered using fiberglass as a wood patch or strengthener. Just never crossed my mind. That's why I love this place. Still learning.

I used the mesh when building a wooden (mahogany ply) kayak. When you add the epoxy mixture to it, the cloth disappears and becomes clear. Dries extremely hard.

I still think it could affect tone, but this drum may not have a hope otherwise.

If anyone tries this and doesn't have experience with fiberglass, make sure you read up on breathing protection (not just a crappy paper mask), eye protection, and hand protection. You will be itching for days if you handle fiberglass cloth. :)
