The one on his right is "THE CYMBAL". That's the 18" gets talked about the most and was played the most with during Beatles. This one:

These are the best close-up shots I've ever seen of either one of those cymbals. And from what I see here my money is on this one being a transitional stamp.

Please, does anyone who attended the exhibit have any facts, observations or theories they'd like to share?

Seems crazy to me that there were most posts in this thread speculating about the exhibit and Ringo's cymbals before the exhibit opened than there are after people actually attended the exhibit.

As always, thanks for any info.

From Jon Petersen

Where does this info come from?I have never heard this before, and having owned both 5 Star Super Zyns and UFIPs, I would be quite surprised. They are not much alike.Jon

I own and have owned a number of Super Zyn , Super Zyn 5 Star and Zyn 5 Star cymbals. Those are the 3 stamps, I have seen. It does seem to be true, that the older they are ( Super Zyn era), the cruder their construction. Hand hammer marks are more evident, pock marks and embeddded impurities are more frequent and the bells, vary dimensionally. By the time the brand, Zyn 5 Star arrived, the cymbals had much more uniformity, the bells had taken on a sort of peaked profile, there is clear evidence of regular machine hammering in the standard Zyn style and the finish is free of holes and charcoal bits. Further, the cymbal profile nests perfectly into the profile of several Ufip cymbals I have and there are telltale small pinwheel marks on the 5 Stars that match similar marks on the Ufips. Super Zyn 5 Star cymbals seem to be intermediate between the two.

It is speculation but it does seem that the more recent these cymbals are, the more like rotocast cymbals they become. Super Zyn weren't the biggest selling cymbals around. It would be hard for me to believe that Premier actually , could justify operating a foundry where they cast ingots for them. Buying ingots ,or even blanks makes more sense and then why not rotocast blanks at some point, with hand and or machine hammering being the stage at which Premier took over the production. They would still be made in England, as they were marked.

But - you are just guessing, right?

There are no proofs or first hand stories that supports this, are there?

I ask because next thing that happens is your statement is cited by another guy on another forum, and a new "internet-created Truth" has been established.

I think this should be avoided - speculations, guesses and so on are fine, as long as everybody realizes that this is what they are. Not truth by any stretch.

Since I am describing in relatively good detail, the reasons for my beliefs about this, it is a little more than guessing. It is an educated guess, a reasoned belief, or a reasonable assumption based on the evidence. There are a lot of things in life, for which there is not a shred of proof, that are accepted as the truth based on available evidence. If someone on the internet , takes my beliefs on as the gospel, when I have explained very carefully the reasons for my speculation and been very clear that it is reasoned speculation then that is their folly not mine. The developments of man have never been based on sticking to the tried and true but have always been based on varying from the tried and true.

This info is amazing as I played Ringo in a tribute band for nearly 20 years. All I can tell you is that I don't think I've ever heard a sweeter set of cymbal sounds than the perfectly pitched big crashes in the guitar solo in Day Tripper. I've always wanted THAT sound. Never got it. I played a Zildjian 20 inch medium ride, 18 inch crash and 14 inch new beats, all late 60's era. Came close, but no cigar.

I also wondered what was the time frame or reason why I was sure I was hearing a sizzle cymbal (NOT slightly choked hats) and then those sounds went away. Man--trying to hear drum sounds on the early muddy Capitol albums...Now I know.....

When I started in the early 70s, I didn't even know what a Super Zyn was...

Due to lack of anything with detail of Ringo's drums at that time, I did often puzzle over the fact that it looked like Ringo had the larger cymbal to his left as my 20 inch was always on my right, the smaller 18 inch crash on my left...

Always thought the chrous in Help was a sizzle. I always just rode the ride hard hitting the edge with the shoulder of my stick creating a long sustain-almost like a roll on a suspended cymbal. Other times I played an optional 18 inch sizzle. Was never sure which sounded better?

Man the rim shots and tone on those Luddy toms on the song HELP! made me love drums! Dean

And thanks a lot for the best photos of these cymbals I've ever seen. I never thought I'd ever get this close of a look at these. Great work!
