Current projects in the works

I just finished doing some restoration work on a museum drum for a civil war exhibit. One of the things I had to do was to make reproduction ears for the drum I was working on. I was asked if they would be able to tell the new ears apart from the originals when they were done and so I told them that they would. Shortly after the ears were delivered I received a call from the gentleman responsible for overseeing all of the restorations for this particular museum and was told that he had a small complaint about my work. He told me that the museum curators weren't able to tell the difference between the new and old ears from several feet away. This may become my favorite complaint ever.

Below or the 6 ears I created for their civil war drum (an 1827 Eli Brown) and the original ear from the drum that is pictured in the middle. I was not able to find a leather tool that matched the star on the original ear so I had to use a small star stamp and then do the outlines around each star by hand.

I picked up this old Ludwig marching snare that had been repainted by someone in the past. There was paint on the badge so I'm pretty sure that this isn't a factory job.

You can see more of the bad paint on the back side of the drum

Gratuitous interior shell shot.

This is the first drum that my daughter will be teaming up on with me so I am kind of excited about this drum. This is going to be a day of the dead themed marching drum. The shell was stained in ebony and there will be 4 sugar skulls around the drum and each will have a different elemental feel. This is just at the very beginning stages so keep checking back.

And now for a lesson in why you should never close your drum in a car door.

I did a St. Patrick's day parade this year and was approached by some friends before the parade with this drum and several very sad faces. Apparently, one of them closed a car door on this thin shelled rope tension drum before the parade even started.

It's a very nice drum made by G-D Drumworkz in New Yory (Can't find any info on them on line) and it has a nice wood grain all around.

But if you catch it just right in the door............

It was a fairly substantial puncture. The shell is 16x16 so that may help a little with perspective.

A look at the damage from the inside

I had to bend some new pieces of wood to make them fit the shell.

Because of the way it punctured, I wasn't able to get all the wood to lay back into place perfectly flat but it was close. Epoxy and then reinforced so the shell won't fail in that spot when tightened up. Close up.

From several feet away it is not very noticeable. There was one other small crack (not pictured) from the door but all I could do on that was seal it and reinforce it from the back. It's things like this that keep me in business.

Amazing work as usual, Matt. Can't wait to see the finished version of your daughter's skull drum. Nice seeing you at the show Sunday. Thanks for taking my GFG drum.

One more completed repair for now.

I got this bass drum in from a customer last week for some minor work. A nice rare bass drum indeed.

A 20" x 14" in a natural finish. There has already been some minor repair work done on the hoops by someone else.

The rail consolette is a replacement and was slipping so I did a real simple fix by adding a small piece of duct tape on the inside of the clamp and cutting away anything that would show. This added just enough friction to the bar to keep it from slipping. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Then there was the mystery fix. I was told there was cracking in the shell that was covered by this steel plate. The cracks did appear to go all the way through the shell.

Oh yes, and a picture of the badge

The plies were reglued and clamped

And I then reinforced the shell from the inside with a piece of oak painted white so it will not stand out. The steel plate was also removed completely from the exterior of the drum.

The cracks and ply separation are now just about invisible to the eye.

I also plugged an extra hole under one of the washers holding the rail consolette on. Here is a picture of the bass drum all buttoned up and put back together.

Great save on the Geo. Way! Not many of those drums around at all. The kit I have is a keeper for life. You do really great work, it's always fun to check in here and see what you've been up to lately. If I lived anywhere near to you in Conn. I'd be hounding you for a job! :D

John

Too many great drums to list here!
