Big WFL Restoration

From Slingalud

I believe you are right, all the WFL interiors I have seen were African Mahogany with solid 1 ply maple re-rings. How would you describe the difference in sound and performance between the 24" WFL 3ply Mahogany bass drums verses the 3ply Maple/Poplar/Maple Ludwig bass drums that you have owned and played over the years?

Roger, the WFL zephyr drums are 3 ply makeup of mahogany, poplar, maple, they are a little less brighter sounding with less volume, than the maple, poplar, maple drums but I think it is more to do with the bearing edges on the bass drums, I have other WFL kits and their bass drum on those kit roar simple because of the sharper edges, The toms from zephyr era kits have always left me unsatisfied as the bearing edges on them are completely flat. the drums are just dull sounding.

I'm not sure what to think with these toms being 3 ply, maple interior/mahogany exterior. There are no extra holes, and i believe they're drilled for the correct mounts, etc.

Could they be pre-WFL built shells with later lugs? What were Ludwig & Ludwig toms from the early 30's like this made of?

BTW... They sound GOOD!!

Aaron, I think your toms are WFL they look correct, L&L have different re ring shape to them.

Aaron, Here is my verdict, I have never seen zephyr era drums with a maple interior, but the re rings do look correct as do the very flat bearing edges, so I think you have WFL toms. also the hole spacing on zephyr lugs will not fit any other ludwig lug.

Good News! Thanks for taking the time to look.

So the drums weren't a complete waste of $!!!

Any ideas on color finishes? I'm thinking solid black or a solid gold lacquer. And should I remove the tacked head beforehand, or is there a way to save it?

Aaron, white was a super popular color seen many of those. no you didn't waste your money, you can pull the tacks out and reuse the original tacks and goat skin head. or drill holes and make it a double tension model, I have some fairly nice zephyr lugs if you want to do that.

Removed the awful Sparkle Brite this morning to reveal a beautiful brown spotted cow custom paint job. Ugh.

Will start the stripping process tomorrow, and with any luck will remove easily.

Here's a pic of some sort of mount on the bass drum that was moved and then covered over again, and some spurs that were doweled and filled. Anyone recognize the hole pattern?? Still not sure what make of drum this is. Will be the first drum I strip, so more info tomorrow....

BTW, for anyone trying to remove Sparkle Brite adhesive, Goo Gone/Goof Off is the way to go.
