I have already noticed 1 thing different about these standard shells. The bass drum spur holes are much closer together than the classic curved spur holes. I'll have to plug the old holes and re drill for the classic large curved spurs. Of course the new wrap will cover the holes on the outside, but i will have to figure out how to match the grey speckled acoustical finish on the inside of the shells.

Has anyone ever tried to match the granitone acoustical coating? I know Lowe's sells paint that looks similar.

see my thread at ghostnote about granitone. the plasticote was the closest i could find, but there are variations in ludwig's paint as well as some variation can to can with these speckle type finishes.

be sure to use a medium light grey base under the stone finish.

I use the one they sell at MalMart, I think the American Accents, but the one in the middle looks to be a better match. This stuff really is amazing to work with.

I just finished removing the old wrinkled up wrap off of my shells. They were glued, but just in spots and the seams were glued pretty good. A few little pieces of ply came off and stuck to the wrap. I am wondering if I should remove them from the wrap and glue tham back into place, or if wood filler would be just as good. They are very minute and very few. All in all the wrap came off extremly easy, with the help off my industrial heat gun.

if you are rewrapping, for small areas, durhams rock hard water putty or bondo are good fillers. I prefer the stronger properties of the epoxy filler i used in the thread referred to above for larger repairs.

Theses shells have woodgrain looking stripes going all the way areound the shell. The stripes look painted on. Except On the bass drum shell there was a 1/2" strip of the original strata pearl wrap at the seam. Apparently when the original wrap was removed, it left behind the stripes from the strata pearl wrap. Look closly at the pics and see the wrap and the stripes. They continue past the wrap. I was confused untill I saw the 1/2" of the original wrap.

I tried accessing that thread, but I am not a member of that forum. I have used plenty of bondo at my shop. I was leaning tward just using wood filler.

Bondo might work better. Id hate for the filler I used to jar loose if the drums ever get played. Now is definatly time to address this issue. Maybe just plain ole expoy would be best. Right Jonn?

here is the pic from the other thread with the granitone match. the plasticote was the best match for that drum. I donot use hardware store type epoxy as a wood filler. I am not going to repost the rest of that thread here sorry. it is not a big deal to join the forum if you want more builder's info. best of luck

Judging by the caps, I'd say the Plasti-cote may be the best choice. Another you can check out is offered by Duplicolor, its GM trunk paint. Try your local autoparts store for that one. It's also fairly close in color and texture to the original Granitone.
