Marc

From mountainhick

here is the pic from the other thread with the granitone match. the plasticote was the best match for that drum. I donot use hardware store type epoxy as a wood filler. I am not going to repost the rest of that thread here sorry. it is not a big deal to join the forum if you want more builder's info. best of luck

MY Finance likes the mod orange.

SInce you started out partial to the Mod Orange, here are 3 more votes in it's favor: 1 from Finance, 1 from me and one from Esmerelda. I think we have a majority but suggest you post a poll on here to get the popular opinion.flowers2

BTW, waiting patiently for you to get back to the conversion fr/Standard to Classic. Curious to see your hole plugging method...Maybe you can get back to working on tubs while waiting for plasti-cote and divine intervention.:D

Currently working on a 7 piece virgin double bass 3 ply early 70's Ludwig kit to be wearing....MOD ORANGE.

I plugged the spur holes in my bass drum yesterday. This drum had telescoping spurs that went into the bass drum. The holes were 15" apart and 2 1/2" from the front edge of the shell. I am converting this to classc larger curved square spurs. The holes for the curved spurs are 24" apart and 3" from the front of the shell. The holes were 11/16" in diameter. I got a 3/4" dowel rod, cut about 10" of it off. T drilled a 1/8" hole in the end of the dowel rod. Then I screwed a 3" drywall screw into the hole. The cut the head off of the screw

After I cut the head off of the screw I chuck the screw up in my drill, get some 60 grit sandpaper, and sand the end of the dowel to make it have a tapered shape, This way the dowel will fit in the hole. Remove the screw from the dowel, just hold the dowel and reverse the drill. Apply wood glue on the dowel and around the hole and insert the dowel and push it in till it's real snug. Tap the dowel in a little further. Clean the excess glue off. I let it dry for a few hours and then I used my dremel with a cutoff blade and cut the excess dowel off almost flush with the shell. If you try to get to close you might get into the shell around the hole. I sand the remaining excess dowel down even with the shell. I used 60 grit on the outter shell repair, and 60 then 100 on the inside part.

The holes are perfectly flush with the inner and outter shell. I am looking forward to painting the inside of the repair area. I primed the patched

This is a very easy repair. It didnt cost much at all and it is a very tight fit and glued solid.

I primed the inner side of the repair. As soon as I get my plasti-kote paint or what ever I find I plan on spray painting the repair. I will blend the new paint into the old. It shouldnt be detectable at all when Im done.

I guess the next step I will do here is drilling the new holes for the new spurs and test fit all that.

LOL your too funny kev!! This repair is very easy. Actually I got the idea from jaye. he suggested using chopsticks to fill small holes. Jaye explained that Chopsticks are tapered and you can easily fill small holes with them. I just made my dowel like a giant chopstick. tapered it and hammered it into the hole. This method is much easier than trying to make the hole the same size as the dowel.
