i talked to a friend recently who has been playing different DW kits over the last couple of years. i don't remember the exact time frame, but he said DW changed the Shells at some point, and from that point on there was an immense change in sound (no surprise there) but the new shells (though of good quality) were not worth the price cause the sounnd was not as good as in the "old" shells.

Sorta like snap-on tools huh? they cost 3 times as much as craftsman, and 2 times as much as mac tools, but they are undoubtly the best tools on the market.

I have never enjoyed a set of DW's I've played. When I was touring, sometimes we would fly in and have backline provided. Most of the time it was a DW kit. Never liked one of them. They all sounded good, but didn't have the projection I like.

since this is a poll thread and polls are opinions.. here's my 2 cents: DW's are just another set of drums, there is nothing special about them and they are WAY over priced.

Neil Peart is John Good's promotion wh o re. For a guy who used to be so particular about his sound, he seems content to promote whatever the boss says. Sure he lives in DW's back yard now, which I am sure is a big reason. He contradicted himself in those big 2 page spread ads plastered all over the mags just to promote the latest and greatest.

Let the flaming begin....

Maybe for your applications, but not mine... there are big doubts.

So back at you, why do you think they are so great?

I just bought a DW solid shell snare and it sounds fabulous! Thats all I know about them. I see them on tv concerts all the time, but those drummers can afford anything I guess. Im sure anything they want to play is a tax deduction, so why not buy the most expensive ones out there. Im sure their drums are a very minor tax deduction anyway.

Opinion - I have a set of X shells. Bass drum is freaking awesome, toms are good to very good, floor tom is the worst, the absolute worst thing in the world to tune, I hate it. The only way to get any tone out of it is to run it really loose. If you try to octive tune with the toms.....forget it.

I have a solid maple DW shell snare and it sounds awesome too, it hits like a cannon with a lot of snap, but guess what? I would take a RK over it any day. A Radio King has so much more "character" in its sound, the DW sounds very studio mechanical. For a solid maple it lacks some woody traits that you would expect, I bet if you had the DW Maple against a Supra you would pick the Supra.

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco
58 - Slingerland Krupa Deluxe
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 22 (need), 13, 16
And some others..

Poppy I sort of agree with you here....Snap-on tools are overpriced like DWs, but they break just the same as craftsman tools do! LoLoLoLo

So, how does that make them the best on the market? Just because the guy drives the truck to you once a week or less? I've owned both, they both have the same warranty, but craftsman are easier to warranty......if you break it, you run down to the local sears that night after work instead of waiting for that guy with the truck to show up the next time......sometimes it can be weeks if you have an unreliable snap-on dealer....Burger Kin
