Dw Drums. What do Y'all think of them?

From latzanimal

I have never enjoyed a set of DW's I've played. When I was touring, sometimes we would fly in and have backline provided. Most of the time it was a DW kit. Never liked one of them. They all sounded good, but didn't have the projection I like. since this is a poll thread and polls are opinions.. here's my 2 cents: DW's are just another set of drums, there is nothing special about them and they are WAY over priced. Neil Peart is John Good's promotion wh o re. For a guy who used to be so particular about his sound, he seems content to promote whatever the boss says. Sure he lives in DW's back yard now, which I am sure is a big reason. He contradicted himself in those big 2 page spread ads plastered all over the mags just to promote the latest and greatest. Let the flaming begin....

I just bought a DW solid shell snare and it sounds fabulous! Thats all I know about them. I see them on tv concerts all the time, but those drummers can afford anything I guess. Im sure anything they want to play is a tax deduction, so why not buy the most expensive ones out there. Im sure their drums are a very minor tax deduction anyway.

So, you are basing your

Sorta like snap-on tools huh? they cost 3 times as much as craftsman, and 2 times as much as mac tools, but they are undoubtly the best tools on the market.

comment on price tag, one snare and the fact that they have pushed their way into the market forefront?

That's all you've got?

My favorite NP quote was how he always played a 22" kick, when all his Tama's were 24's. He even stated he went to the 24's because he liked the sound of a couple other drummers who were playing 24's....

NP is John goods puppet....... but then Rush lost their edge years ago...

I've got to say this...DW has a "modern" sound.....a certain sound. And I don't care for it in the slightest. Ludwig classic maples are also a "modern" drum, but they have a totally different sound. They are warm sounding and tune up easily, and they are USA made still as well. Gretsch USA made drums are consttructed similarly as well, but they still sound like a Gretsch kit. I'll take either of those over a DW set anyday.

With that said....the best sounding kit I ever played/owned was the late 40's Leedy kit I recently restored. I was running out of room in my place, so I decided to part with something. Since I had no real attachment to them, it was the Leedys......plus, they were the highest valued kit I owned so I figured why not cash in big? If I was to buy another kit today, price no object I would source another Leedy kit (not the slingerland era or the modern reissues, but the elkhart or indy drums), or I would go for a new USA made Gretsch kit, or an Eames kit. I already have both 3ply and 6ply Ludwigs, so no need for a third! :D

I'm probably going to get flamed on this....but......Neil Peart isn't the end all-be all of rock drummers. I was never a HUGE fan. He was IMO ok, but not as great as everyone said he was. :D

Ok, flame away....Laughing H

Oh, and DW drums are NOT vintage, so I don't think they really belong on THIS forum. There are other forums more appropriate for discussing them IMO. :pLoLoLoLo

He's a great symphonic melody drummer. I personally love the driving the band Bonham sound.

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco
58 - Slingerland Krupa Deluxe
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 22 (need), 13, 16
And some others..

My opinion on DW hardware: Boo!!!!! Garbage. Especially the new stuff. 9000 series is horrible. I have burned through pedals, thrones, snare stands, cymbal stands....all within months! Plastic? Really? The real old stuff was actually pretty great tho.

My opinion on DW drums: Nice looking and well built for the most part with the biggest hype machine EVER behind them. I have seen and heard some pretty horrible quality control things over the past 10 years or so. Overall I would say they sound "canned" to my ears...if that makes any sense. I have played tons of DW kits and snares in tons of situations from huge sound systems to small clubs and various studio environments. Just don't dig em overall. They don't have any personality to me and I would never spend my hard earned money on their drums. Just my personal choice

Now, if their drums were half the price I might be into getting a "Classic" kit for touring, but....as it stands I think they are overpriced and have little to no character. I don't even like to be seen playing them in public because I don't want people thinking I would actually spend my money on something like that! No offense to anyone who owns and plays them, but I almost feel like they are a status symbol to some people. In a lot of cases, a gold plated, ugly, horribly tuned status symbol with the absolute WORST stock heads I have ever heard.

Also...the whole George H Way/Camco thing really turns me off to DW because they use (or used) Camco's molds for their lugs and pedals. It just reminds me of one of the most forward thinking, kind, and genuine drum enthusiasts ever to build drums getting screwed over hard near the end of his life...and it makes me not want to support them. I know that is not really a justifiable reason against dw, but it still is how I feel in the back of my mind.

mschrant: The shells changed when they stopped using Keller shells and started making their own. I don't know that that is a bad thing..infact I would say it is a positive thing. They have made some pretty great innovations in terms of shell technology. The new "super solid" snare drums seem pretty incredible.

Has anyone played one of these super solid bad boys?

ANyway....sorry about all the negativity. I am curious to hear other opinions so that maybe I can be swayed to be a believer!

I grew up listening to bands with drummers that had the "modern" sound. That's probably why I like the sound of DWs. Since then, I've listened to mostly classic rock and jazz, which is probably why I'm starting to dig the sound of the vintage stuff more and more. Either that, or my ears are "maturing" and want to hear more individual character out of drums and cymbals...

This was my opinion on the other thread about DW (with the exception of the older stuff being good comment. I had enough failures for a lifetime in the earler days of the hardware....not a fan) and I got flamed several times by the same guy who just sounded like a DW promotion machine and didn't even bother to read what I was saying.

I agree with you 99%......be prepared to get flamed yourself.... :p
