Vintage Ludwig deal - Need help!

Loading...

From eamesuser

I think you got a good deal, congrats.Hard to put a value on the vintage vibe sometimes.Did you get the bass drum cymbal mount or arm with it? Anyway they should clean up nice and sound good.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. The bass drum cymbal mount and bracket are the only parts are missing. I will try to find a replacement, but for now I have a bracket from a Vistalite, that is waiting for restoration, that should fit. I can use it temporary.

Cheers

For those who are following this thread, here are photos of the Ludwig Supraphonic snare that came with the drum kit.

It appears to have marks of glue and sponge on interior. The previous owner(s) should have thought it will choke the sound or something... Another "interesting" modification is the screws in the strainer holding the strap.

Pay attention to the "AG" (?) stamp. There are 2 missing screws and washers/spacers (I don't know the name of this part)

It does look like they put some kind of damper inside, the glue stops at the muffler.

The cup washer and lug screw will be easy to find at hardware stores. The older strainer is designed for string. The clamps were added.

Take your time, strip it down and clean it, it will come out pretty good but the dimples will still show. Wax it in the final stage before reassembling it.

Is that a 5" because it looks short.

The snare head looks original as does the batter but I`m not sure about the batter. The snare side head is sought after because it`s the Ludwig brand for that drum. If you change heads, guys looking to complete with original heads will want it.

Today I checked the hardware that came with my Ludwig kit. The hi-hat stand and bass drum pedal are more modern (check the first posts, they are maybe 80's/90's) and I plan to sell them. By the way, I sold the Paiste 200 hi-hats.

The snare and cymbal stands are vintage so I took a look at them. The snare stand has a Ludwig USA mark as you can see in the picture, I didn't found anything in cymbal stand.

Someone may have glued some type of foam in the drum as muffling. I've seen it before, kills me.

Hi. As you know, this Ludwig kit don't have the cymbal arm and bracket.

I'm thinking if I should by an original L arm from 60's or a recent reproduction. I contacted a Ludwig distributor in my country and the product L1372 (cymbal arm + bracket) will cost Euro 85.

I would like to have a 60's original arm but they are available only in US and the postage costs are high (plus the taxes).

I would like to know your opinion. :) Original or Reproduction?

Cheers.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
