Vintage Ludwig deal - Need help!

Yeah, everything ArchxAngel says. The outfit is referred to as Super Classic set, with a Supraphonic snare drum. Serial number indicates late 1967 or early 1968. They appear to be pretty grungy and a bit rusty. A good cleaning wouldn't hurt. I have a set just like them, same finish, same era, and it sounds great. The outfit will probably sound good when fixed up.

Thanks BEC. Cheers

That Supraphonic doesn't appear to be the aluminum version but rather the earlier chrome over brass. I don't see pitting on the exterior, which was common for the chrome over aluminum versions. My personal opinion on value would be 700-1000 US. Doesn't have extra holes, needs a cleaning and has some rust, but overall they look in to be in great condition.

Hi Jay. I'm with you. Pay attention to the metal color behind the chrome.

The set needs some serious loving, but should be well worth it when done.

There's a spreadsheet with serial numbers (470,xxx - 501,xxx) in the 1st link below to my '67 WMP Downbeat that leads me to believe that the set is more likely from early 1969 (2nd link). Others on this forum are a lot more knowledgeable and have databases for dating via serial numbers. My kit is a one owner with receipts (in the linked photo album) so I can say with certainty that the set you're scoping with closely matched SN's (688,xxx +/-) was built later than the spring of 1967.

Pick it up...if it's 7/8lbs...it's yr reg snare..

If it's more like 14lbs...it's COB.

Also check the hoops..I.e. NOB..? Does t have to be...but dos help.

If a keystone badged Supra has a serial number it's almost 99.99% going to have a Ludalloy (aluminum) shell. I think the "brass" you're seeing is just some gunk on the shell, what I see on the lower portion is lots of tiny pits in the chrome, just like most (but not all) older aluminum shelled supras. A brass shell from that late in the decade would have a "B" stamp by the muffler and those are exceedingly rare.

The top hoop seems to have the same brass showing on it. Try a magnet on it, if it sticks then, whatever that is, it isn't brass.

Cool set, at the right price it would clean up real nice.

Looks like a '69 super classic to me.

Ludalloy snare, natural interiors, nob tone control.

Awesome kit.

The main thing you will need to restore it is elbow grease.
