Vintage Ludwig deal - Need help!

Loading...

Looks like a decent set of 50 year old Ludwig's to me!

I start at the top. What is a perfect condition kit like this worth? $1500 or so? Now, start deducting from there. Rust present? New heads? Condition issue's? Non original hardware? Extra holes? Everything is a deduction. Then, base your offer on that.

I've walked away from many deals because the seller looked at too many fleabay adds or saw perfect examples on line, and that's the price they were sticking to. They won't budge on the price usually, so I walk!

On the flip side, if they are reasonable, and you can point out some things the kit needs, you can make an amicable deal!

Good luck, and remember, condition is EVERYTHING!

I think he may be seeing the way the wrap is rolled on to the shell. The Ludwig hump and thinks it may be out of round. From what I can tell from the pictures they seem fine. They should clean up nice. Maybe a little yellowed or faded a bit , but will still look great. I would not mind having that set myself.

I would value this 3pc between 900 and 1100 (€URO that is) Supraphonic snare looks to be in OK player's condition with some pitting and could fetch between 250 and 300 Euro, but more like 250 in that condition. If you got the whole lot for under a grand you'd be doing alright. There doesn't seem to be too much wrong with the set. It's missing the cymbal arm for the bass drum, but I didn't spot any drastically wrong. It will clean up nicely. It's Keystone badge with serial # so it's from the 60's. You'll probably see date stamps inside the shells or you can use the web to date the drums by serial number. Good luck! As another European I'll just say that when you see these drums for sale locally you should buy because shipping and taxes from the states can cost quite a bit.

Picture these drums after a complete disassembly and overhaul...beautiful aged WMP wrap all cleaned up and polished. Chrome all cleaned up and sparkling. BD hoops re-painted. A little maintenance to a seam or two. New heads! With minimum invested in parts and a lot of elbow grease, these classic keystone Luddys would demand $1500.00 easily. In my opinion you're not going to lose on these drums. Good luck!

Hi. What do you mean with "little maintenance to a seam or two"? Did you see any seam issue?

I have another question: Do all the late 60's Ludwig have a date stamp inside shells? (Keystone badge)

Some shells never got stamped at the factory and also the date stamps are very easy to "erase" if someone cleans the inside of a drum. A misplaced shot of windex and it's eradicated.
