Thank you! It's great to have your feedback. Your words help me continuing in this journey. This tasks require time, patience and passion. You should feel good when you restore drums, this is the secret!

As you can see in the previous posts, I just do small tasks when I have some free time, the restoration process will last probably months. Step by step, I will have this set clean and ready to play.

Back in high school (late 90s for me), we had a Tama Swingstar kit from the mid 80s I believe. It had that speckled gray interior; toms were of the "power" variety. Very good sounding kit!! I'll leave a photo of me with that set, just for grins.

this is your kit I think..on the Tama web site they have catalog pics from the past. I have an 84 Swingstar that I just could never part with. They do sound great!! Your's is getting the TLC it needs I see!!

I used vinegar, a long time ago, to remove the rust of a cheap kit rods and lug nuts. After the vinegar, I cleaned with a toothbrush and soda to neutralize the pH. They keep clean, shinny and rust free until today, so I'll follow the same procedure for this kit.

The rods and nuts will stay 24 hours (aprox.) in vinegar, then I'll clean them.

Today I removed the blackpaint from 12" tom.

While cleaning the 12" tom, I noticed some cracks in the wrap.

I checked the 16" floor tom and it has some cracks too.

I used a toothbrush to remove the rust residues.

Some rods still had a bit of rust in the screw, as the lug nut screws, and I decided to let it stay another day in vinegar. The previous jar had so much rust so I put the parts in new jar with clean vinegar. You can see the color difference:

I think tomorrow they will be fine and I will wash, polish and protect them.

Looking great! Amazing how well that works. I'm getting very good results with scrubbing the bits and changing the vinegar every 12 hr. After the worst is off it is 12 hours in a Dawn/Bar Keepers Friend soak. Off to the tumbler and as new. Thanks for the pics and updates.
