That bass and snare I paired up with a 14" floor tom and a 12" mounted tom

They are stage band style and only really match color-wise

I may have another turquoise shell in my boneyard

but it is at very least, partially stripped and has other issues

I have also a faded turquoise Lyra snare drum shell

That I plan to recover in tiger eye to make a matching snare for my Matador kit

As for toms I search the web on a regular basis

for a 12" and 16" in the turquoise with the standard double lug sets

I have the 16" floor tom, that's why I asked. If you want to keep yours then maybe I should give in and let you have mine.

Last week before finding my little fifty dollar Zim Gar kit up in Brighton

I had made some inquiries and offers for another Zim Gar kit

I found while surfing on the bay (square black and gold badge)

20"16"13"12" (no snare) in the blue oyster pearl with the typical fade to green

These are the thick shells no re-rings the bass drum has a painted grey interior

while the other toms are unpainted

also none of these drums have any heads on them at all

as for a snare

I figured I already have a chrome Zim Gar snare

(same square black and gold badge)

which came to me as a free throw-in when i bought my Ludwig stainless steel kit

On these blue oyster Zims

the seller and I went back and forth some but ultimately

I gave 225.00 plus another 75.00 for shipping

Do you guys think that was too high? Its too late either way but just curious as to your thoughts

I would say that you did indeed pay too high for that. The exception would be if the condition was A1. They look to be in great shape and quite clean, so you were not raped. Just another addition to one of the coolest and plentiful MIJ collections out there!

BTW - if the values of vintage MIJ kits continue to climb, it will only justify your cost more and more.

another BTW - you mention a couple posts ago - about recovering something in Tiger Eye. How so - when that wrap is not made anymore. You intend to strip and re-use? I am assuming that the Tiger Eye you refer to is AKA Root Beer Swirl.

I had been watching that auction. Good to see they went to a good home and now I know where all the good MIJ drums in my area keep going......

You probably paid on the high side of value, but i don't you think you payed to much. As drummerjohn333 says the price of vintage mij drums does seem to keep climbing.

I totally love/am jealous of your MIJ collection BTW.

If it's on the high side, just ah-more-tize it back over some of the screamin deals you must have got on some of all that other stuff you got. Yeah that's it, ah-more-tize it. :)

It's hard to put a value on that wrap, especially where it's "matured" to the brown-gray [I might be tempted to leave that floor tom in the sun to match...] all the parts are there, chrome looks good, faucet T-rods, sweet kit!

Hello guys,

The drums arrived today

The seller really packed them well

everything seemed very well protected from the ravages of shipping

I noted the clean almost new lustre that each shell had

I noted the dulling the seller spoke about on the 13" tom

Looks like someone use acetone based "Goof Off" rather than citrus based "Goo Gone"

to try and remove some sticky residue (just a guess really) But I know first hand the goof off will eat the wrap

But long story short I was told about this dull area beforehand

Everything was just as expected

untill I got to the 14" (not 16" as I thought) floor tom

To my horror there was a severe crack in the wrap from one end to the other

In sort of a big "S" shape

In going back over the seller's pictures that section of the drum was never featured

and as I mentioned,

the drums really did seem to have been packed with better than average care

In looking at the exterior of the carton no signs of excessive impact or any impact at all can be noted.

I e-mailed the seller and he assured me that drum was undamaged when packed and I tend to believe him

still I was the one with money spent and the big surprise

It was starting to be a dicey conversation

but the seller is sending back fifty dollars

Of course I would rather have the mint floor tom than the fifty

But stuff happins

14 is a score, a little cooler than 16. We should have known from the pic where the 13" shell was so close in size to the floor tom, sitting on top of it.

Will you be gluing down the wrap at the crack, or....?

Mitch what I did and have done to a few other damaged wraps on drums is

since the crack runs the entire height of the wrap from edge to edge

First I removed all the neighboring hardware on both sides of the crack

so that I can get up under the wrap

Then I applied clear 3m packing tape (sticky side up) under and along one edge of the crack placing the tape halfway on the underside along the edge of the crack

Then I carefully pressed the opposite edge of the crack down

onto the exposed sticky side of the tape

It is not the best fix most likely but it stabilizes the damaged area

In a way that is 100% reversable should a better idea come to light

I have seen some terrible patch jobs where the wrap was glued down to the wood shell

and it just looks God awful and causes more damage than just a piece of cracked fifty year old plastic
