Sprayed some shells today

Jeff - I'm going over -raw- wood and I'm using Miniwax spray (satin finish) polyurethane. I -have to- do more than one coat because I do light coats and the wood soaks up the first pass. I sand with 00-00 steelwool and hit them a second time. The second pass is all that it needs. All that 'heavy-coats' stuff is strictly amateur.

Not my first rodeo...

The hoops look beautiful and I should have them on the bass drum tonight. I'll take some shots for you and for the guys who have been following the project a bit later on tonight/late.

The WFL Club Date bass drum is done!

I'll let the photos tell the tale. With the natural maple hoops and the mahogany strips, the drum looks killer. (If I do say so myself! And I do!)

The Jazzfest is in the pipe, Jeff has several jobs at the moment... please be patient. As soon as I have it, I'll assemble it, add it to the kit, set-up the drums and take them out for a spin. Final project photos will be posted when I have them all set-up.

The drums are looking great. I like the natural maple hoop with the mahog inlay. Can you take a close up of the hoop please. What did you use to glue the inlay into hoop?

Really nice kit John, I'm glad to have had a part in it. I'm sorry the snare is taking so long, I will try to sneak it in as soon as I can. Would love to see a video of you playing them when your out for the "test drive"

Love, love, love it! While waiting for the Jazz Fest, there is a nice looking custom Supra in the corner that looks like it would like to come out and play.

The darker mahogany shell and the lighter maple hoops with mahogany inlay are a great combination, which looks classy and reserved. While on the other hand, it also has the slight look of racing stripes. I feel the pictures are not really showing the best of these drums. Some pictures of the entire kit outside in natural lighting will show the true nature.

Awesome collaboration, Jeff and John!

Sorry John, I know your experienced, shoot, your the one that's always telling us to spray light coats and sand in between. I wanted to post that pic for others to see what excessive coats of polyurethane or varnish can do over time. The finish on your drums is a conversion varnish, you can pour gasoline over them and it wont hurt them, just don't light a match, lol.

Jeff - don't close out the thread just yet. I'd like to post pix of the completed kit once the snare drum is added to it. -Then- when the project is finished/complete and the photos of it all set-up are posted, Jumping2 you can bring it on home.

Scott - which background snare did you refer to as a 'custom Supra'? There are 7 snares back there! (16 total in the house...) the three that are displayed on stands are an; 80's Ludwig 6.5"x14" Hammered Aluminum Supraphonic, 84' Ludwig 5"x14" Hammered Bronze Supraphonic and a 'home-made' 6.5"x14" 3-ply mahogany Super-Sensitive that I built myself. Which one were you referring to when you said, 'That custom Supra in the background would be perfect with the kit.'

Just curious which one you are talking about.
