Cleveland Rogers Surprise! (and-a-half!)

Loading...

Hi All,

Ok, so I buy some old Rogers drums based on photos and a minimal description. I figured I'd restore em and either keep them for myself as a gig kit, or flip them. I 'thought' I was purchasing a black wrap kit, or black lacquer set of drums. Again, based solely on just a few photos.

Well, they arrived today. Looking very dusty, dirty, unused and... they had been -painted- black some time back, judging by the years-old layers of dirt and gunk on these drums. My first reaction was, 'Oh, $hit, I just threw away several hundred dollars on crappola I'll never be able to sell.'

So, just for the Halibut, I stripped down the 13" rack tom (Cleveland label) and commenced to strip off the black paint just to see what was under there. I used, Citistrip, which is a safe stripper to use when removing paint from wrap.

I won't keep you in any more suspense... MARDI GRAS!!!

I'll post some photos soon, I'm still in 'mid-strip', but as soon as one drum is completed, I'll post a bunch of shots.

Can you believe it? I'm out of my mind happy and jumping for pure joy. Not only are these Cleveland Rogers drums, but in one of the rarest finishes too! The Drum-Gods are smiling on Johnny tonight. I must have accumulated some real good karma by restoring so many old kits over the years to deserve this outrageous score. I'm blown away. Clapping Happy2Clapping Happy2Clapping Happy2:D

Photos to follow... (I included a photo I found of the wrap, but it is of another kit. Not the one I'm working on. Sample only!)

You and me both! The rack tom has the last coat of Citistrip on it as I write. After that it's a thorough cleaning to make sure all the Citistrip is off, then I'll lay into it with Novus II and Novus I polish. It'll be as good as I can make it.

Not too sure I'll be selling this kit. Unless my wife gets on my case about "too many kits," I'm thinking of keeping these rare-birds for myself. It'll always be a 'player' after restoration which means it's a PERFECT gig kit! Great sounding drums that I won't worry too much about if a drunk spills a little beer on them.

I'm in drummer Heaven. Where's my 72 virgins? Can't find that many you say? lol

Well, the wrap 'looks good' visually, but it's in rough shape. Looks like the paint interacted with the plastic/vinyl and it's kinda lumpy, as in not smooth to the touch. I'm afraid to try to level it off with anything abrasive. From 1 foot away. it looks good. If you touch it though, the wrap feels 'rough.'

Man, I hope the wrap on the floor tom and the bass drum are in better shape than this rack tom. If the paint didn't do this mottling to the wrap, then I've found the reason why it was painted to begin with. Shame really, the wrap does look great. As well as possibly having ruined it, the paint preserved the brightness of all the multi-colored sparkles over the years.

Keep your fingers crossed for me that the floor tom and bass wraps are in better shape than the 13".

BTW, it's a 13", 16", 20" Holiday kit. The floor tom has original clip-mount legs. Must date back to the 50's. The rack tom has the tight mardi gras pattern, small tone control knob, small lugs, but the badge I have questions about. It's script, just not sure if it's 50's script. Everything else on the drum is 50's. Any Rogers experts out there... what do I have here? (Sorry for crappy photos...)

You don't suppose the Citristrip had anything to do with the rough finish?

I don't know -- just asking. I bought a can of that, but hadn't used it yet. I have a mid-60s Ludwig 22" BD that at some point in time someone painted black -- and actually did a pretty good job. They removed all the hardware when they painted it (except for the keystone badge), and if it wasn't for some "tom rub rash" it still looks pretty good. The black paint adhered very well.

But... blue sparkle underneath. I hadn't tried stripping it yet, partly because I've had other projects to do and partly because I'm just a little leary of pulling-the-trigger on the Citristrip.

Hey, great find! and good luck with the rest of it!

John, Great score! This is a great example of how out of order those paper tag serial numbers are. But they do help...a lot. 42K should place them around 1963. The year of the b+b lug change to da beaver. I have a set of Mardi with beavertails with serial numbers in the 37K-38K range on the Holiday tag drums. These are b+b lug drums-right? Are the other drums in the same 40K serial number range? If so I'd say 1963. Missed the beaver-tail by this much! lol.

The small muffler knob is a very late 1950s style. You are correct sir! They used up those parts until they were gone. The 2 hole stay tight floor tom leg brackets were an option for any Rogers drum from the 1950s into the 1960s. I have a factory matched set for the staff drummer of Universal Records-1965 beavertail set that has 16" and 18" floor toms and both have those 2 hole floor tom leg brackets. No drum key needed. Some folk liked them better and if you spoke up for a request in the Covington days they would give you what you wanted. That script logo on your tom is the most common found on Rogers from 1960 and up. Not one of the 1958/59 odd script logos that were a short run after the eagle badge. Hope this helps.
