I already do! flowers2

Great talking to you on the phone. We'll have to do it again! I love talking drums as much as you apparently do. Photos of the tags will be coming your way as soon as I pull the heads to add new ones.

Check this out... I was doing some homework and I found this at Steve Maxwell's site:"ROGERS" Mardi Gras: The Rogers Mardi Gras wrap finish is a rare one indeed. This finish is especially rare with beavertail lug drums. The finish was only in the color line from 1958-1962. Beavertail lugs didn't replace the crack-prone B&B lugs til circa 1964. So, as a result, while Rogers Mardi Gras is rare with B&B lugs, it is extraordinarily rare with beavertails. We have seen only a couple of sets in this finish with beavertail lugs. However, we have seen several "fakes" where B&B lug drums were drilled out to accept beavertail lugs. Beavertail lugs have a different hole spacing than B&Bs. So, if you find a beavertail Mardi Gras drum in your travels, be extra careful and be sure that it isn't a B&B lug drum with enlarged holes. Pull those lugs off and double check. And, if you do have an original, CALL ME, especially if it's a snare drum or a complete set. "The Beavertails on my drums are a nice tight fit! It made me feel so good to read this. It's like hitting the Drum Lotto to find this kit. I swear, I'm going to start buying every painted kit I come across! You really never know what you're going to find. A buddy of mine bought a painted Ludwig keystone kit and when he removed the paint... Psych-Red! I used to avoid painted drums like the plague. Never again. Unreal.John

Gary - I'm dedicating this restoration to you, buddy!

GaryN was generous enough to send me a piece of vintage Mardi Gras wrap to patch a bad set of holes in the bass drum. The patch arrived today and the repair has been performed. (see photos)

I did a good job. I'm just a little disappointed that the last guy had drilled this rare vintage drum with the finesse of one who clubs baby seals to death for a living. Sloppy holes. But, no more! From 12" away you cannot see the patch at all. The nice thing about black is; it is a forgiving color if you're trying to hide anything... like a patch.

Gary, thank you so much for making it possible for me to restore my kit. I don't know how I could ever repay such a great gift/favor. If we ever meet, steaks and beer is on me! Cool Dude

The hoops will be here monday along with the missing swivo mount for the cymbal arm. The next set of photos will be the finished kit! Stay tuned, same Bat-Time, same Bat-Channel!

aww shucks John. Thanks! Nothing owed. We are "square" as the patch sent. Thanks for sharing the set and restoration in this thread. Nothing needed in return that batch of last pics make me smile big ear to big ear. Nice work!

Glad to help the rare Mardi beaver cause and yourself as well. The sound that are going to come out of those saved painted drums will stun ya. Prime era Covington beauties. Restored and good for another 50 yrs of drumming.

This Mardi Gras finish is extremely nice. I wonder whether such finishes have ever been exported to Europe, 'cause I've never seen/ heard of one here.

Good job so far, John!

(I personally would paint anew the cutting line with a black water-based felt marker (one with a thin line). That will even make this cutting line invisible from a distance of 12". :2Cents:)

Ok, here she is, resto completed! For the 'purists:' I know these kits came with silver sparkle bass drum strips. I had some red glass glitter wrap and I opted to bring out the red elements in the wrap more than the silver. I think the red glass in the hoops is hot. It visually punches up the kit nicely.

Please excuse the dark photos. I'll take a few more tomorrow in the sunlight so you can see the drums much better. I just couldn't wait to show them off, so I fired off these shots in the living room under incandescent lights. Better shots tomorrow!

She's a real gem. I haven't played them yet, but by the time I post some new pix tomorrow, I would have had a chance to play/hear them. I fully expect a real sonic-treat.

Enjoy my Mardi Gras'!

I had not seen this thread but discovered it this evening and have savored and slowly read each post and viewed each pic. It has been the highlight of my day. I am thrilled for you and that you were able to save such a beautiful kit. I had seen this wrap in pics before and thought it georgous. What moron would paint over something that beautiful? I know you want to kick yourself about the 13" tom but you can't tell by the pics. Live and learn. I have made a couple mistakes on some beautiful vintage drums but the overall set came out great. The set looks beautiful and I am estatic that it fell into the hands of someone as skilled and appreciative as you.

Enjoy Enjoy Enjoy. I celebrate with you !!! Can't wait to see some pics made in natural light. Load us up.
