Cleveland Rogers Surprise! (and-a-half!)

Loading...

Blair- did you check out the early clip mount and legs on the floor tom? This kit is cooler than anything I've seen in awhile... and I handle a lot of cool drums. This one is over the top in the mojo dept. I'm thoroughly enjoying working on them.

John, Congrats on the score of the rare Mardi beavertail. Those aren't b+b lugs! Ignore my initial post. Your serial numbers in the 40K range now makes total sense and dates these restored beauties to 1964 as the serial number chart I sent you yest. reads. SCORE!!!

Mardi along with blue ripple was cut from the color chart in the 64R cat.(1963). Finding them in the beavertail version is tough. They did have extra pearl and Mardi drums have surfaced with even Dayton interior tags. The majority of Blue Ripple and Mardi Gras out there will have b+b lugs. But it left room to add the 3rd onyx(red) and the 6th sparkling pearl(champagne).

Thanks again for that very useful chart along with all the research you've done on these wonderful drums, Gary. That's the first Roger's cataloguing effort I've ever seen.

Yep, it's 'Holy Grail/Bucket List' kit for sure. I still can't believe my pure dumb luck in getting these. I've begun work on the bass drum. I have some extra holes to fill. I'm going to get the patches I need from the wrap underneath a lower rear lug. I'll keep everyone posted as to progress and then I'll post photos of the finished kit. The floor tom and rack tom are tuned and they sound amazing. Warm woody tone that really projects. Lots of attack too. Must be the bearing edges. I'm in love... again! lol

You are very welcome. I kinda like this olde Rogers stuff. Just a little...

Before you go sliceing pearl for a patch email me direct with the size of pearl you need. I have a Mardi throne project that I have to get to Mr. Lawton. Maybe at the end of this month at his show. It is split in the bottom back and the friend that passed it to me gave me some extra Mardi pearl from a trashed tom to have it fixed right. I might have enough for your project and mine. Mardi beavertail is very special to find. I had to stop, drop and throw down coin for mine. Drove to Boston from NJ many years back to look see in person that the lug holes weren't enlarged.

I can't take credit for that serial number list. Just passing it along. It has been going around like the lockness monster myth way before my time. Some folks that started it have passed. Bill M. from Classic Vintage Drums cleaned "the list" up a bit last year. Great SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gary - check your pm's! You're on! I want these drums restored 'right' if at all possible. In terms of 'size', I'd need a piece to repair the wrap under an oval swivo cymbal mount. That's the extent of the damage to the bass drum wrap. PM me.

Thanks again...

I just finished stripping the paint off of the bass drum. OH MY GHOD! If it didn't have that stupid extra set of holes the last owner/a$$hole cut into it, it is the most beautiful of the three. The color on the sparkles in the wrap is vibrant. It looks the way it must have looked 45 - 50 years ago. Mikey... you were right, bro! The paint preserved the wrap!!!

I'll post photos once I have the repairs done and the drum has been re-assembled. I honestly still can't believe my luck with this set of drums. Incredible, even if I say so myself.

Congrats John! Gary N gave me a heads up on your thread so I am late to the party. Guess I need to read the restoration section from time to time.

You are doing right by the kit. Not sure what gave the 13 a bumpy texture, but go with it. Did the other drums come out nice and smooth? BTW - the textured Rogers wraps were only on the glass sparkle finishes, not MG. No glass in that finish. You will love the way it sounds with those desirable early 3 ply shells. Careful when replacing the lugs. They are probably the first gen beavertails with the thin walls on the screw receivers.

Can't wait to see the finished project. Set it up and use her for your home kit and enjoy!

Here's my 20,12,16 bvtl mardi kit to help inspire you to keep moving (or to make you even more anxious about getting the finished result).....

wow john. this is amazing. that wrap looks extra great. i always love your energy when working on a drum project. its always inspiring.

i was gonna ask why plug the holes. why not just use the extra cymbal mount? but if gramps can hook you up with some wrap to fill, that should do the trick as well.

mardi gras is one cool wrap. you better keep these drums ,damn you!!Yes Sir

Mike - What does it tell you that I'm selling my clubbies so I can keep this one!

Powertone - Oh man, you have the snare too! Beautiful kit. Yes, the rack tom is the only one that came out 'lumpy' and I'm now (officially) blaming the Citistrip for melting the outer layer of the wrap. I used the Graffiti-stripper on the other two drums and the wrap is fine, smooth and just the way it's supposed to feel and look.

I am always envious of your drums, thanks for posting the motivational shots. Although, I'm psyched enough for three guys even if I'd never seen your kit. I'm really enjoying working on these. One of the most gratifying drum restorations I've ever done. Walking
