70's Slingy NOS Brass Shell/Build

Loading...

(*For Steve B)

Hi All,

A couple of months ago a dealer started selling off vintage NOS Slingerland and Gretsch snare drum shells on ebay in all kinds of sizes. These were NOS 30/40 year old shells that had never been drilled and assembled into functioning snare drums. The price was out of this world. I bought a raw, early 70's, 3-line Slingerland Brass shell w/crimped beds, 6.5"x14" for under $100.!!!!!!! Eye Ball

I told a bunch of my drum buddies about them and they started buying them up like there was no tomorrow. I've included a bunch of photos of what I did with mine. I bought 8 killer repro lugs, added a 1930's strainer & butt plate, Puresound wires, COB triple flange hoops and vintage Aquarian batter. I had a new pair of sticksaver hoops I was going to use, but I opted to use them on another drum. This one kills just as it sits. Dry, loud, articulate and Oh my thunder, what a crack!

Steve - you asked for it bud... this one's for you.

Note: I tune all my snare drums; A note on the reso, C# on the batter. If a particular drum sounds better in another zone, I'll tune it to the sweet spot in its tuning range. Otherwise, A bottom, C# top, engage snares, and it's, Warp 10, Mr. Sulu.

Enjoy,

John

such craftsmanship very nice

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Kev, I think yours is the BOMB with the single flange hoops and clips. I love that look, instant retro/antique. I like the way you appointed yours more than what I did with mine which is, kind of pedestrian looking as snares go.

Nice job on that one!

Man, I wish, K.O. posted here! He used that new repro 3-point strainer on his that just looks killer.

The Beavertails was Kevin's (K.O.) suggestion originally. Because I found those repro's, Kevin ran out and bought one of the deep shells for himself so he could make one.

Geez, do you remember how many guys built drums from those shells? Had to be 8 or 10 guys at least. That's a lot of snare drums!

True, everybody was getting them after you told us about them. Including me.

Thanks, they are cool.

I have decided they are bronze.

Well, maybe they all sat in the same closet somewhere. Now all over the US.

Well their pics are getting together now here.

I agree, the clips and the old stuff is such a well thought out presentation.

Mine is just a pedestrian.

Both of yours are great looking.

Here is one of their cousins.

What are you talking about? That drum is a beauty! How does it sound/play? I love the tube lugs and the strainer. The tube lugs must really open her up and let her sing.

Beautiful drum! Nice job on that one. Me likey!
