I just read your thread about bulding you citrus mod kit. It was very imformative. i'd kill for one of them rolllers, but i dont know if it would be worth $650 to just wrap a few kits. My bass drum came out a little wavey. I had no idea they made such a contraption. Yours really turned out nice. I decided on glossy black on my hoops. I found a pic of a kit on jammin sams with black hoops and compared it to your natural finished hoops. I think the citrus mod really pops out from the black. I'm taking my hoops to work with me today to install the inlay strips.

From Drumjinx

Once I had seen how the Natural hoops looked with the lighter Citrus Mod wrap, the choice was made. The clear satin finish on natural maple is very complementary....at least to me.

Ok Y'all everything dont always turn out like i expect it to. I took my freshly painted wood hoops to the shop today to glue the inlays on. I carefully taped the hoop off to make sure not to get glue on my new glossy black paint. I forgot to examine the rims 1st to see which side would be the bottom and top. I wanted the nicest looking part to be on top on the outter side and nicest looking part on bottom on the inner side of the hoop. Well I peeled the tape off and OMG!!! Glossy black paint came off with the tape. I really dont understand why this happened. I wet sanded the primer with 400 grit sandpaper. The paint should have stuck. Im taking the night off and will resand the hoops tomorrow and then brush the glue on without any tape. I would show pics but I just dont feel like f***in with it tonight.

This has happened to me before. I now run a razor along both sides of the inlay wrap before I peel off the tape.

Thanks for the comments on my build. I went back and forth on the natural or black hoops. I think both look good. I just wanted to be different this time.

The wrap press is nice. I bought it along with a buddy. I think I have done at least 100 drums on this press. Most were for customers. It payed for itself.

Good luck on the rest of your build. I cant wait to see the final result.

I haven't done this, but maybe glue the inlay on first then tape the inlay off and paint? Did you use spraycans or your own mix? Sorry for the trouble you had.

Cheers,BigE

I dont know where my head was at. I didnt even think about the protective layer film on the wrap. I coulda just put the inlay on the painted the hoop and peeled the protective film off of the inlay and presto!! but cut around the edge of the inlay 1st.

I got my wrap from jammin sams. I had the hibond tape put on the underside of one end of the wrap. This is to stick the wrap where it overlays itself. I noticed he put the hibond tappe on each eand of the inlay pieces. I think I might just stick the inlays with the hibond tape.
