Slingerland chrome over wood.

Hi Folks,

In the next coming days I'll get my hands on these drums. (24", 14" & 13")

Looks to be clear interior with re-rings. (3-ply?)

Hoping for no water damage and decent bearings,... fingers crossed.

Most important, what are my chances to find a matching floor tom?

Can be either 16" or 18".

Depending on its condition, I'm considering re-wrap to match my turquoise 12 lugger TDR.

Hoping for the best so I'll also post a thread in the "wanted to buy" section.

1 bass drum leg and tom mount missing for sure.

Owner is looking for the missing hoops & rods, so I might also need those.

Advice and offers welcome,...

Thanks

Stef

There's a 16x16 COW on eBay right now.... 5 days to go.

I'd contact the seller and ask for more pics...

Hey Stef..

If you can hold out for the 18", then you'll have a "51N Super Rock Outfit"...

They Kick..

I'd love to see that in your beautiful Turquoise.. Good luck with the project whatever..

Cheers

Thanks Kevin, I'm contacting the seller tonight.

John, thanks for the comments. I' d love to add a 18" but I have no idea what it would cost me and I guess a 16" is more common. I googled "51N Super Rock Outfit" and found your kit. What a beauty that is. Is that wrap original?

Looking at my pics, can you tell me more about model, dates, wood,... ?

I played a 70's COW Slingerland kit a couple of weeks ago (24", 16",13") ... it sounded enormous !

I never liked the chrome to much so if the wrap is less than 60%, it's probably going to be re-wrap.

I'll have the drums on thursday,... I'm paying 200,00,... guess I did OK.

Stef..

The serial numbers will tell the story, when you receive the drums post the numbers.. to me it looks like 78-79 3 plys..& rings.. but the numbers will nail it down... 200 Buckeroos sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Re my kit , yes it's the original wrap.. the guys here tell me it's fairly rare..

For me.... I've never seen the same colour combo anywhere. It was looking pretty bad up till about a year ago..this site inspired me to bring it back up to scratch. I've probably spent around 700-800 bucks on it this year.. lugs, mounts, heads and the '78 6.5 10 lug COB is now part of it too.. The hardware is all Pearl 800 series and at the present I'm using a P1000 pedal..

It is sounding great..

Cheers

John

Hey Stef, nice set you will be getting..Badge numbers will tell the date for sure..I know that Slingerland made 3 ply with rings and 5 ply with no rings up to about 1980..A few side notes the tom mount you should used is a "Super set-o-matic" it has the arms Dont used just the plan set-o-matic tom mount..The super was made to hold the bigger toms on the bass..If i was you i would just clean the chrome wrap up .If you were going to re-wrapped the set the chrome is VERY hard to remove from the shells..You will be removing some of the wood from the shell to get it off..I would wait for a 16" or 18" floor tom to come by they show up on Ebay from time to time..You did great on the deal for the drums at 200.00...Mikey

Great input guys,... thanks !

I'm meeting the seller on Thursday so I'll post pictures and serial on Friday.

I will keep my eyes open for a COW Floor Tom. There is one on Ebay but I didn't get an answer from the seller yet,... hoping for the best and that he's prepared to ship overseas!

The picture shows that the Bass drum has the re-rings so I hope the toms will have them to.

Regarding the tom mount, I see what I will do.

I'm hoping to use this Slingerland for my weekly rehearsal with the main band.

I'm playing 3-piece kits for years now and so used to have a 24" ride where tom2 is supposed to sit. I might just go for a snare-stand or a single tom-arm and leave the second tom.

All option are open!

..If i was you i would just clean the chrome wrap up .If you were going to re-wrapped the set the chrome is VERY hard to remove from the shells..You will be removing some of the wood from the shell to get it off..

Hi Mikey,

This thread handles the subject of removing and re-wrapping COW Slingerlands.

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=12804

The Copper is a major pain but the chrome doesn't look to difficult.

I'll keep you guys posted on the progress!

You're starting to have quite the collection there, Stef! Hopefully I'll get to check some of these gems out when I'm back in June. If you ever need to ship anything to me so I can then ship it to you, let me know. I'd be more than willing to help you out.
