Slingerland chrome over wood.

Thanks for the nice comments.

That 26" must sound enormous and look spectacular, no tom mount I assume. Please post some pictures.

Although mine looks shiny and clean, it's far from perfect. Those scuffs and scratches are normal for those chrome over wood sets I guess.

Anyway,... as long as the bearings are ok and the construction of the shell is intact, sound wise you can't go wrong.

The entire set sounds super but especially that 18" floor tom is the best sounding floor tom I ever heard. In general I find it much harder to find the proper tuning on bigger sized drums but that's not the case with this one. The tuning range is huge,... I do prefer it way down low however.

I have Remo coated ambassadors top and bottom on all 3 toms now, very happy with them.

Hey Stef,

I agree on that 18".. I've got aquarians top and bottom on mine..and have it tuned real deep as well..

Cheers,

John

I am glad that you guys are happy with your 18" toms. Problem is I`m not....

My tom is a copper over wood and has 4 legs. Somehow I think this is the problem. If I lift the drum up, it sounds fantastic, -When I put it back on the floor it sounds dead. Somehow it seems to choke, as if the sound was stopped from coming out of the drum as soon as it is, sort of, was firmly planted on the ground. A friend told me to try out different rubber feet to the four legs, reccomending Pearls "Free floating" rubbers. -Does this make sense to you guys?.......

Hi Fortissimo,

Not sure but I think all 18" Slingerland floor toms from that era came with the 4 legs so that shouldn't be the problem.

I have been reading similar stories with floor toms on this great forum.

Good rubber feet are definitely worth trying. An other solution could be a floor tom rim. My 16" floor came with one but I couldn't hear a big difference with or without so I took it off.

Hi Stedi!

That floor tom rim was new to me. Was that made by slingerland?

If so, they must have been aware of the problem.

However, I think I´ll try the rubber feet from Pearl first.

Easier to find and propably a lot cheaper than a new rim.

Thanks!

Fortissimo,

I don't think those floor tom rims were available in the 1970's.

Mine looks quite modern.

Thanks for sharing that link John. I play my drums on a thick rug so that's why probably I don't hear much of a difference. I'll surely try it tomorrow on a hard surface floor.

I will be looking for a local European distributor for those rubber feet, they're cheap anyway so,....

Hi Stef,

Yes I do the same, thick rug and larger than the original rubber feet, just kidding about the share thing. I don't know if any other brands used four legs on larger floor toms, I often wish it were just three legs (when setting up at that slight angle it's sometimes a pain). Anyhow the 18's sound is worth it.

Cheers

John
