Yamaha Project - Soooo Dirty

This is possibly the grubbiest kit I've ever bought (and I've bought a few). The bass drum damping was an old pillow and another one that had gone hard and appeared to have blood stains. I didn't open it up as I expected to find a dead, mummified kitten.

I don't know the model name for this one. I suspect it's from the end of the Y badge era. 22/12/13/16 and a 14x5 steel snare. The snare is similar to another I have but with a strainer I have never seen before. It is currently held together with a nail and doesn't work. And tbo I'm not sure how it's supposed to work.

As filthy as it is there doesn't seem to be any moisture damage and the chrome wrap looks like it'll clean up okay. The chrome is poor to say the least.

It really could do with a hose off but I'll put on gloves and mask and clean carefully.

If anyone knows the model and has a photo of a working strainer it'd be appreciated.

Looks to be a D-22 kit.

They sound GOOD... They will be worth the effort to clean up.

That snare throw is different than mine, so I'm guessing this was a later set, just before the 9000 series was released.

I love the mummified kitten line! There was a pillow inside the last vintage kit I bought that looked like it was used as a civil war bandage. How long can bed bugs live sealed in a bass drum anyway?

Stop stringing and tuning your instrument, make music now.

Thanks Jim, I've had numerous early Yamaha sets but I think you're right that this one is a bit later. I found this post which is a kit of exactly the same vintage right down to the snare strainer http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=52158 . Can't find any others though

Mr Toast - I don't know the answer to that but after I'd opened up the bass drum I started coughing and didn't stop for the rest of the day. I'll wear a mask before opening the others:eek:

I saw your post in the other thread. I don’t believe these are Luan ply shells- all birch. Yours have the angled interior ply seam, right? They did that with every ply so they can slide against each other to make a tight and void-free shell.

Really brilliant design and they continue it today. It wasn’t until I got deep into wood working with guitar making and pool cue making that I fully understood the engineering going on there. The ad hype is really useless but I think they wanted to keep the technology close to the chest as long as possible. These shells will be round long after you and I are gone. They tune up easily and sing out. They compare favorably to Jasper shell Gretsch with similar heads and Tuning. Maybe a touch brighter but certainly capable of a great jazzy sound.

Jim, you could be right about the plies being birch, I'm not good enough with wood to discern that. Yes it will have the angled seams.

I have a 20/12/14 kit from the early 70s with the steel snare and they are pretty hard to beat. I maintain the quality is up there with the very best of what was being produced at the time.

This set will clean up well but man, there's a lot of rust on these hoops

Have Precision Drum make up new wood hoops for you. They can do the inlay groove the original width for you too. They made hoops for my D-20 and they did an excellent job (while I waited!)

Well there you go! I could not find one the same earlier in the week. This looks to be a single mounted tom set up. I wish the snare was with it as I reckon I'll be needing some reference to help get the throw off complete and working on mine.

Someone will find the tomb of the missing floor toms one day. What a day hat will be:D
