When Did 1920s Ludwig Metal Shells Change? Last viewed: 27 minutes ago

Loading...

Here's a couple shots of my 5x14 6-lug 2 piece heavy shell snare. Rob C's book says the strainer is from 1911-1919. It is the only place on the drum that has the Ludwig name. The second shot shows the edge of the shell at the bead, as well as the returned bearing edge, soldered to the shell side. I thought I'd have to replace the strainer, but so far, it's been working fine. Currently, my favorite snare......marko PS: thanks to everybody for all the posts here; this is great stuff.

hope you guys don't mind me bringing a great old thread back to life....

what do you all think this one is exactly? it sounds to me a lot like the snare that atomicmorganic owns. i bought this one,by the way. arrived today and i am loving it. i also own two early 20's 5x14 ludwig heavy shell 8 luggers.

marko-i didnt know you owned that drum or either forgot about it. first time i recall seeing that strainer. great drum!

Mike I had to see where you bought this from it looked exactly like one I had. I didn't care for mine. hope your mileage varies, that's why I have a 10 lug model now in 5x14" but looking for a 8 lug 6 1/2x14"

i'm loving it. but i knew kinda what it was gonna sound like. i have a 6.5 leedy utility in a 6 lug. i was surprised that the previous owner has it tuned nicely with what looks to be original style clips. i'm leaving it as is. it sounds deep, fat and has a very nice tone to it.
