What would make this kit worth $4000???

Here is a CL post that showed up here in OH a few days ago...

https://akroncanton.craigslist.org/msg/d/vintage-original-ludwig-red/6663331652.html

The ad mentions a SNAR (I can only assume they meant a SNARE), and a few other bits, but the picture shows only the 2 toms and bass drum. I thought it might be fun to speculate as to what that snar and other bits might be like in order to justify the $4000 price.

My first thought...the bass drum is filled with meth.

It is a nice looking Downbeat set but not worth more than half that asking price. I'm guessing he really doesn't want to sell them.

Asking price & actual selling price are completely different things. One look on ebay comfirms this.....there are many vintage drums offered for sale there for outrageous money, but when you look at actually sod listings, thats the true worth of something. You can ask for the moon, but you won't get it. See where I'm going with this?

The seller is:

A. On drugs

B. Highly delusional

C. Doesn't want to sell

D. Is fishing for a sucker

Multiple choice. I choose all of the above.

This listing looks like a scam to me.

Those are not the seller's drums. That photo is taken from the Rusty Drums Ltd. website: http://www.rustydrums.co.uk/

Just look at how Rusty Drums stage their photos. It's the exact same porch.

In fact, if you Google "Rusty Drums Ludwig red sparkle downbeat" this kit comes up in the images and it's pinned on Pinterest from an ad that's long since ended.

Also, no one who's owned a kit since the '60s would refer to the bass pedal as a floor pedal.

I wonder what the scam is, exactly. Maybe they just sign your email up for a bunch of spam.

Ah ha...good detective work Electric Co.

Usually the scam is to post something for way less than its worth...this must be playing on the “know it all” type. I admit I almost replied just to be snarky.

No, not that kit specifically. I've attached the result I get when I Google it. From the background you can tell that's a drum set staged and sold by Rusty Drums. This Craigslist "seller" is just using a photo they pulled off the internet and not being upfront about it. Everything about the ad seems fishy to me.

If you follow the Google result it takes you to Pinterest and then to vintageandrare.com, where it says the ad is no longer active. This is all hardly in line with the seller's claim they're the original owner.

I'm going to try and find when Rusty Drums first listed the kit for sale. I don't imagine it will take me too long.
