Mikey - It's going under the pedal any way so it'll never even be seen. I am going to do your idea and use it to fill the gap just to have it 'look' complete. Only instead of tape, I'm going to take it to Staples and have them laminate it for me in plastic! I can dull it up a little bit with 00-00 steel wool to match the rest of the strip.

Man, that is one killer bass drum! And the Slingy heads are cool too. From here the wrap looks like will clean up like new, has really bright color to it still.

Sorry John as well, now back to our regular scheduled programming.
I popped the heads off of the bass drum. (see photos below) I found a few interesting things.
1. The bass drum has the same 6-ply maple shell as the snare drum, only the bass drum has re-rings - the snare did not!
2. The interior is painted in the same black paint and it has a gold W&A stamp inside just like the snare, only the bass drum does not have a stamped serial number - the snare drum did. I'm beginning to think that the snare drum may have been added to the kit at some point with the other drums in the kit being of older manufacture. Food for thought.
3. There is a tacked-on red felt muffler inside the drum that I'm not quite sure is factory installed. Does anybody know if W&A did stuff like this on early kits???
There is one small bubble in the wrap on the bottom of the drum that I will glue down. Other than that, the wrap is tight and it will clean up really nice.
The bearing edges are as new as the day they were cut. Inside, the drum is immaculate and in pristine condition. Lots of work to do on the hardware, but it shouldn't take long to have this one 'refurbed' and back up and running in short order.

johnneat stuff all around. I think that idea for the inlay is a good one.I did something recently that you'd be real good at with your graphics background. I was assembling a sky blue pearl clubdate bass drum that I had been collecting parts for. had everything BUT hoop inlay, which can be real hard to find. so, I grabbed the digital camera and took a few photos of the wrap on the bass drum. picked the one that matched the best and printed a full sheet. I then covered the whole sheet with clear shipping tape,front and rear. gave it some thickness and some gloss. cut it into strips and used it as inlay. I think next time, i'll get some photo paper and do it that way. looked better than none at all. that's for sure. just food for thought. John, I would of loved to get a "whiff" of that lumber when you first took one of the bass drum heads off. The snare looks "killer" man, I just love that wrap! Great job as always, you do some great work man! Tommy Bowing
Tommy - It actually smelled like stale air. Old, funky. Remember that it's painted inside, so any wood odors would be suppressed by the paint layer. Not quite the olfactory experience you might imagine. :p
I started on the hardware today. It's going to take hours and hours to put it right. The pieces I've done so far look spanking new and shiny. I also cleaned and reseated one of the calf heads. It had been mounted off-kilter decades ago and the head took on a lop-sided shape, higher on one side than the other. I soaked it in warm water until the skin softened up and then I mounted it evenly on all sides back on the shell. It took the new shape and it is now molded to the bearing edge it will sit on. Should be easier to tune from here on out. see photos
More as I make progress. This is a brute of a drum, big and hard to work with because of its size. Back to work....
