Trixon project

they look like they have spur mounts of type C, which were used from 1959 to 67. the hoops are the 1mm with a tight curled in flange---used between 1956 and 1966, the floor tom legs look to be the type used between 1960 and 63. Do they have a wingnut or a flattened oval thumbscrew? the later were used from 1960-63.

i meant floor tom leg mounts, not the legs. the legs, themselves look to be unoriginal. Trixon had straight legs until 1967 when they became square, with a round cutaway , used to rotate and fold them in for storage and a slight flare at the bottom.

Ahhh. I actually know the legs are not original as the seller told me. Can't recall finer details of the mounts, though Idon'r recall them having a big wing nut, more akin to that press-in style of vintage prems.

if they are as you say , then they are replacement leg mounts and of no value in determining their date of production. so, we are at 1959 as an earliest date. if you could post pictures of the leg mounts , it will offer a clue. -----there is a plastic gasket or cushion that allows for gentle tensioning of the thumbscrew or wingnut on these mounts ----black between 1960-63 and grey between 63 and 67. ---it does look though that the drums come from the 1960-63 period. as Diamond , indicated there is often a # stamp inside , that indicates the year (last two digits) . it is missing sometimes. I have an identical kit , including the snare which date from probably 1956.

Hi Brody and Calfskin.

it's a Trixon LUXUS 0/200 in white marine pearl - a "little bit" faded to yellow ;-)

The drums are early 60s - 1960/61 if the sizes are metric on the bass and floor tom, and then 1962/63 if they are real international inch.

Brody, if you look on the trixon site, the guy who runs it also has one in his collection in wmp.

i too am from the uk and was watching the sale, i was tempted but decided to pull out as i really want a speedfire to complete my collection.

Nice set you have there!!

Love the set, hate the yellowed color. Those teardrop lugs are beautifull...God knows why Trixon went to the rectangular type lugs in "66 (or so). The teardrops are better looking!

Ordinarily, I'd say not to rewrap, but in this case I'd agree with it.

For some reason, I think a nice WMP suits this set.

good luck with it and congrats!!

Unless the wrap is just cracked beyond repair, I would first suggest you take them down to the bare wrap (all hardware removed) and start with a deep cleaning of something like Simple Green, something that has a deep cleaning yet non-drying cleaning effect to it. You may be surprised to find out how much of the yellowing washes away as much of it is likely nicotine and pure grunge from the environment. Remember, these old drums spent may years sitting in bars filled to the rafters with smoke and other environmental hazards. You could well be sitting on a kit that turns out more "mellow" than yellow.

If it doesn't clean up well, at least you already have the gear removed. I love my old kit, and they looked very dingy and dark yellow when they cam to me. After I spent the elbow grease, it was worth it as they now glow more of an Ivory than yellow.

Thanks again all! I too love the teardrop lugs - so stylish! However, I'm afraid the wrap's damaged in a couple of places so it will have to go. Don't hate me but I've ordered some nice emerald green diamond wrap just because I've always wanted a green kit and I do intend on keeping these drums! (A faithful restore would be WMP but I wanted something a little different!)

I've also sourced a missing rod and claw from trixon.de and also a bass drum logo. It's the bass drum heads I need now. I know they're pre-int so just keeping my eyes open, there's no rush!

However, if anyone has any spare badges faithful to the period of this kit PM me, as the only ones in stock at trixon.de are new old stock, and would cost me quite a bit. I'll get em if I have to but will wait it out a bit!
