From GretschJazzMan

Oh thats a good idea, did you water it down, spray right on the drum, what worked best for you?

I used the kind from a spray can. I just sprayed it on, let it sit for a few minutes and then wiped off. Actually worked well on some hardware too.

Sonor SQ2 10 14 18 American Walnut
L.A. Camco 12 14 18 Moss Green
Gretsch Round Badge 12 14 18 w/snare Champagne
Gretsch Round Badge 12 14 20 w/snare Burgundy

Dow Scrubbing Bubbles are the way to go on this wrap.

Spray it on, let it sit a minute or two, then towel it all off.

If they're really funky use an old tooth brush to clean out the texture.

Those Gretsch tone controls get heavily corroded, but they shine right back up by letting them sit in vinegar for a couple hours.

Be gentle with the satin flame - it scratches easily.

It sure does. Most of the 1960s Satin Flame finishes I have seen are pretty scratched up. Thats one reason why I never bought a set of them.

I've also heard that Scrubbing Bubbles does a great job on them. Must be something to it.

Bon Ami claims not to scratch- even stated so on the can. It has worked great on the hardware, they look brand new. I have yet to try the scrubbing bubbles. I ordered the Novus 3,2,1 kit and have tried it thus far on the tom. It has made a huge difference, there was almost a brownish hue to the wraps, I'm sure from age, sun, and who knows what else. The novus has taken that off and eliminated a lot of the scratches. The 1 plastic clean and shine adds a level of clean/ depth to the satin flame that I did not expect to get back.

I will get some more pics up soon, the missing bass rods and claws showed up- perfect match, look great, and the tone control arrived as well, it appears to be brand new. I also ordered some pieces to repair the floating action pedal, they have shown up along with a new set of heads. I have been out of town the last few days for work, so I have not had any time to work on the kit. Stay tuned for more!

Would Novus work on satin flame? I'd be concerned that it would damage that kind of finish.

It has worked great so far. It is amazing how it has brought them back to life.

I am moving on to the bass drum now, the front hoop is missing the wrap insert. Any ideas what to do with this? It is painted black, I was thinking about a light sanding and repaint black. The beater side hoop (apparent as it has pedal marks) still has the wrap insert, so they wouldn't match.

I added a picture of the snare now completely cleaned, hardware, wrap, and new heads. Bad photo, will take some better shots later, but look at the difference in the blue of the snare, and the worn out greenish ugly color of the bass. The snare looked the same before the cleaning.
